Microsoft's new Outlook mail is a welcome Hotmail replacement

If you're one of the millions of people who are embarrassed to admit that you still have a Hotmail address, your day has come. Seriously, you can migrate to Microsoft's impressive new Outlook email service, and start using its smart services to merge your contacts with Facebook and clean out all the newsletter spam that has built up over the last 1,000 years.

OK, OK, yes, you're saying ... "Outlook? But I already have Outlook. It's an app. On my computer." Well, you can blame Microsoft for confusing things by using the name of their popular email and calendar client as the name of their new service that offers ... email and calendar. But don't let it stress you out. At least you can put your Outlook email service into your Outlook app!

As a Gmail, Hotmail and erstwhile Yahoo mail user, I am sufficiently impressed by what Microsoft has cooked up here, a mail service that will soon mercifully?replace the aging?Hotmail as the default webmail for Microsoft's Live service. It's called Outlook, and that means you can get an @outlook.com address (today, in fact). You can keep your old Hotmail address too, and even add other aliases ? completely separate email addresses that route to certain folders ? to hand out to retailers and other would-be spammers.

Some of the top features are available in the current Hotmail and in comparable form on Gmail and other emails, but what makes this whole thing so nice is its interface, and how?so much of the smart stuff happens automatically, or at least semi-automatically.?

Right after you migrate your Hotmail account to Outlook, all those machine-generated newsletters, shipping updates and social updates get readily categorized, for your filing or deletion. Anything with attached documents or attached photos is also called out in a special "quick view" category.

You can very easily apply rules by individual address, a selection of them, or a whole folder or "quick view" category. The main filters, under the Sweep menu, are:

• Move all from??-?Puts every received email from sender into a designated folder, and offers to do the same with future emails.
  
• Delete all from??-?Deletes every received email from sender, and offers to do the same with future emails.
  
• Schedule cleanup?-?Lets you choose how long you want emails from a given sender to sit in your inbox before they're automatically moved or deleted. (As someone who is bad at cleaning out the inbox, I love this option!)
  

It may come as no surprise to people who have been watching the development of Windows 8 and Windows Phone that your former Hotmail contacts, along with contacts from Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, even Gmail, can be merged into a big ole database labeled People. This is the same People database that is accessible throughout Microsoft's products, so users of Windows Phone, for instance, are basically already set up for Outlook mail ? they just have to log in.

The social integration doesn't stop there. You can quickly jump on a live chat with someone using Facebook (alternatively, of course, you can use Windows Live Messenger). And when you click on an email from somebody you are Facebook friends with, or who you follow on Twitter, their status appears to the right of the note. And if you're not a friend or follower of them? You can quickly remedy that shortcoming with a click.

The interface itself is clean and butter smooth, with very nice contextual menus that pop up when you need them, one-click read/unread buttons that show up on rollover, drag-and-drop contact info and more. I have yet to see an ad, but when they do appear, they will be (for the time being) shoved off to the far right, in a gutter, which alternately becomes the social update display when you are viewing emails of friends, and a messaging window when you're actively chatting with someone.

Microsoft tells me that the data mined by the Outlook mail service won't go as deep as others, so while ads served will be contextual, they will only be based on the subjects and (name brand) senders of email, rather than on the actual contents of email, which may get more personal.?

At a technical level, smartphone power users may be delighted to know that this new email service is based on Exchange Active Sync which means that when you set it up as a mail account on your iPhone, BlackBerry or other device, you can get push updates, and as more features roll out, treat it as a bonafide Exchange account (but one that's free).

The Outlook mail service is the heart of a major revamp of all of the Live services, and when you sign up for a new account or migrate your Hotmail account to it (by clicking on the Options?button), you will see a new People contacts manager and a fresh new SkyDrive interface as well. The Calendar portion of the service is not yet updated, so don't get too mad when it feels a bit crusty by comparison.

Yes, Outlook mail is a work in progress. I've experienced lots of hiccups, particularly surrounding the integration with Facebook and Twitter. It is, after all, in beta and likely to be there for a while. Once Microsoft gets the kinks ironed out, though, and gets a healthy population using it, the plan is to phase out the painfully antiquated Hotmail for good.?

As someone who only touches his Hotmail with the proverbial 10-foot pole, but who has spent an unnatural amount of time over the past few days inside Outlook mail, running smart email filters, watching with glee as a ridiculous amount of old mail gets flushed away, I welcome the change, and applaud Microsoft for doing some real Web innovation here.

How to avoid traps in plastic electronics

Plastic electronics hold the promise of cheap, mass-produced devices. But plastic semiconductors have an important flaw: the electronic current is influenced by "charge traps" in the material. These traps, which have a negative impact on plastic light-emitting diodes and solar cells, are poorly understood.

However, a new study by a team of researchers from the University of Groningen and the Georgia Institute of Technology reveals a common mechanism underlying these traps and provides a theoretical framework to design trap-free plastic electronics. The results are presented in an advance online publication of the journal Nature Materials.

Plastic semiconductors are made from organic, carbon-based polymers, comprising a tunable forbidden energy gap. In a plastic light-emitting diode (LED), an electron current is injected into a higher molecular orbital, situated just above the energy gap. After injection, the electrons move toward the middle of the LED and fall down in energy across the forbidden energy gap, converting the energy loss into photons. As a result, an electrical current is converted into visible light.

However, during their passage through the semiconductor, a lot of electrons get stuck in traps in the material and can no longer be converted into light. In addition, this trapping process greatly reduces the electron current and moves the location where electrons are converted into photons away from the center of the device.

"This reduces the amount of light the diode can produce," explained Herman Nicolai, first author of the Nature Materials paper.

The traps are poorly understood, and it has been suggested that they are caused by kinks in the polymer chains or impurities in the material.

"We've set out to solve this puzzle by comparing the properties of these traps in nine different polymers," Nicolai explained. "The comparison revealed that the traps in all materials had a very similar energy level."

The Georgia Tech group, led by Jean-Luc Bredas, investigated computationally the electronic structure of a wide range of possible traps. "What we found out from the calculations is that the energy level of the traps measured experimentally matches that produced by a water-oxygen complex," said Bredas.

Nicolai explains that "such a complex could easily be introduced during the manufacturing of the semiconductor material, even if this is done under controlled conditions." The devices Nicolai studied were fabricated in a nitrogen atmosphere, "but this cannot prevent contamination with minute quantities of oxygen and water," he noted.

The fact that the traps have a similar energy level means that it is now possible to estimate the expected electron current in different plastic materials. And it also points the way to trap-free materials. "The trap energy lies in the forbidden energy gap," Nicolai explained.

This energy gap represents the difference in energy of the outer shell in which the electrons circle in their ground state and the higher orbital to which they can be moved to become mobile charge carriers. When such a mobile electron runs into a trap that is within the energy gap it will fall in, because the trap has a lower energy level.

"But if chemists could design semiconducting polymers in which the trap energy is above that of the higher orbital in which the electrons move through the material, they couldn't fall in," he suggested. "In this case, the energy level of the trap would be higher than that of the electron."

The results of this study are therefore important for both plastic LEDs and plastic solar cells. "In both cases, the electron current should not be hindered by charge trapping. With our results, more efficient designs can be made," Nicolai concluded.

Most Prostate Cancer Patients Don't Die From the Disease: Study

FRIDAY, July 27 (HealthDay News) -- Men with prostate cancer are more likely to die from other conditions, such as heart disease, than from their cancer, a new study finds.

Living a healthy lifestyle that helps prevent chronic diseases can prolong life even among men with prostate cancer, the researchers added.

"Our study is the first to analyze specific causes of death among men with prostate cancer," said lead researcher Mara Epstein, a postdoctoral researcher at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston.

Most men who died from prostate cancer over several decades of the study were men diagnosed when they were older or diagnosed before the advent of screening for prostate-specific antigen (PSA), she noted.

"We hope the study will have an impact on the clinical management of men who receive a diagnosis of prostate cancer," Epstein said.

"We hope it will encourage physicians to use the diagnosis as a teachable moment to encourage men to modify lifestyle factors, like losing weight, increasing physical activity and stopping smoking," she explained. "We believe that adopting a healthier lifestyle may reduce a man's risk of other chronic medical conditions that ultimately account for more deaths among men with prostate cancer than the disease itself."

The report was published July 25 in the online edition of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

For the study, Epstein's team used the U.S. Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program and the Swedish Cancer and Cause of Death registries to collected data on the causes of death among more than 700,000 men.

U.S. deaths were for 1973 through 2008; for Swedish men it was 1961 through 2008, the team noted.

Over these periods, 52 percent of the Swedish men with prostate cancer died, as did 30 percent of American men with prostate cancer in the study.

Of these deaths, however, only 35 percent of the Swedish men died directly from prostate cancer and only 16 percent of American men died from the disease itself, the investigators found.

In addition, as the study continued, fewer men died from prostate cancer while deaths from heart disease remained the same.

By the last five years of the study, 29 percent of Swedish men with prostate cancer died from it as did 11 percent of American men, the researchers calculated.

Deaths from prostate cancer varied by age and year of diagnosis. The most deaths were among older men and among men diagnosed before screening for PSA began, they added.

With PSA screening, prostate cancer was diagnosed early and more low-risk cancers were identified, the researchers explained.

Dr. Durado Brooks, director of prostate and colon cancer at the American Cancer Society, said that "this is a lot of reinforcement for a lot of information we already know about. Many more men die with prostate cancer than from prostate cancer."

Brooks added that "prostate cancer is largely a disease of older men, and many of the men who are diagnosed have other medical problems that end up killing them."

Most prostate cancers are slow-growing, and therefore not lethal. In a recent study it was reported that only about 10 percent of men die from prostate cancer whether they receive treatment or not, he noted.

For Brooks, these findings argue against PSA screening, which too often "leads down the path of unnecessary treatment."

"Men should understand that not every prostate cancer needs to be found and every prostate cancer that's found does not necessarily need to be treated," he said.

Another expert, Dr. Louis Kavoussi, chairman of urology at North Shore-LIJ Health System, The Arthur Smith Institute for Urology in Lake Success, N.Y., added that "prostate cancer does kill and if you pick it up early, it can be treated."

The problem with PSA screening is that too many men are treated when they don't have to be, he said. "It's not bad to detect prostate cancer. The bad thing is that you treat everybody," Kavoussi suggested.

"We need to become smarter about who actually needs to be treated and when people need to be treated," he added.

Many men don't need to be screened, Kavoussi said. Those who should be screened are men with a family history of prostate cancer, blacks and anyone else at high risk, he noted.

Writing Using the Eyes Might Help Paralyzed Communicate

THURSDAY, July 26 (HealthDay News) -- A new technology may enable people who have lost the ability to move their arms or legs to use their eyes to write in cursive, or script.

The technology, which enables people to produce smooth eye movements in desired directions, could be of great benefit to people who have lost limb movement because of diseases such as Lou Gehrig's disease (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also called ALS) or spinal or other injuries, according to the study published online July 26 in the journal Current Biology.

The "eye-writing" technology might also help improve eye-movement control in people with conditions such as dyslexia or attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), or in professions that require strong eye focus, such as surgeons and athletes, according to a journal news release.

"Contrary to the current belief, we show that one can gain complete, voluntary control over smooth pursuit eye movements," Jean Lorenceau, of Pierre and Marie Curie University-Paris, said in the news release. "The discovery also provides a tool to use smooth pursuit eye movements as a pencil to draw, write or generate a signature."

The technology uses a visual display to help people learn to develop smooth eye movement. It doesn't take much practice, according to Lorenceau.

"One can also imagine that, in the long term, eye movements can routinely be used in man-machine interactions," he said.

Lorenceau is developing an improved version of the eye writer, and tests with ALS patients should begin next year, according to the release.

OVERKOR is going to be a first person fantasy shooter. You can choose between six magic crystals, each representing an elemental (fire, earth, storm, water, darkness, light), that will serve you as a weapon. You also have the possibility to combine your two favorite ones, or you can just stick with a single elemental. For example you can combine fire and darkness crystals and be a Fire-Darkness Mage. The crystals and weapons you chose limit the range of spells you are able to pick for battle. You can switch spells in-game using the spell-pool, the source of your current available spells. Your spell combination defines your game style and experience.

OVERKOR is the name of the most powerful elemental crystal ever seen. However, it remains undiscovered, since the time of the great war. The legend says that mages, who are in possession of OVERKOR, will be invincible. Their crystal will have unlimited power and will be connected to the OVERKOR. With such power on the loose, it?s not hard to imagine the fear of the non-mage people. They tried to prevent the mages from ever finding it, thus causing a devastating war between mages and non-mages.
In a hidden cave, the two mage leaders finally found OVERKOR, bringing victory over the non-mages. But one of the leaders wanted to bring peace to the planet and end the war once and for all, while the other one sought only total destruction. For the first time in history a mage raised his hand against another one, causing the mages to divide and fight against each other for OVERKOR.

In our game you will experience fast paced multiplayer action. Whether you go for pure damage, sniping single targets, supporting your team, suppressing the enemy team, blocking damage or assassinating enemies from behind, all possibilities are open! You can combine any of these roles the way you want and choose your own personal gaming style. Elvis Presley Bars (Peanut Butter Banana Bacon Bars)

Recipe by: Willow Bird Baking, with peanut butter filling adapted from Fine Cooking
Yield: about 15 bars

Shortbread Crust Ingredients:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1 cup cold butter, cut into small pieces
1/2 teaspoon salt

Peanut Butter Filling Ingredients:
2 cups creamy peanut butter (use an emulsified kind like JIF, not natural peanut butter)
12 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature
2 1/2 cups powdered sugar
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
4 tablespoons hot water
3-4 bananas
honey for drizzling
5-6 strips bacon OR large pretzels for topping

Directions:
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and line a 9 x 13-inch baking dish with a foil sling with the ends overhanging the pan to facilitate the removal of the bars later on.

Pulse the flour, powdered sugar, and salt together in a food processor to combine. Add the cold butter chunks and pulse about 10-12 times until you have the texture of coarse sand (you can also use a pastry cutter or two knives to accomplish this if you don?t have a food processor). Pour this mixture into the prepared dish and use a spatula or the bottom of a glass to press it down into an even layer. Bake it for about 15 minutes or until it?s lightly browned. Let it cool completely.

In a medium bowl or in the bowl of a stand mixer, beat together the peanut butter and butter until smooth and fluffy, about 1 minute. Add the vanilla extract, 2 tablespoons of hot water, and half the powdered sugar to the mixture and beat until combined and fluffy. Add the rest of the powdered sugar and another 2 tablespoons of hot water. Once combined, beat for an extra minute until the mixture is smooth and thick like frosting.

Use a spoon to glob half the peanut butter mixture onto the cooled shortbread crust, and then use an offset spatula to gently spread it into a roughly even layer (don't worry if it's not perfect.) Lay banana slices across the entire surface. Glob the rest of the peanut butter mixture all across the top. Again, use your offset spatula to gently spread the peanut butter mixture over all the banana slices (you want the banana slices to be covered because bananas oxidize and turn brownish, so the bars are prettier if you can't see them. It's hard to get them all covered, but just be patient and keep working the peanut butter around, cleaning off your spatula now and then.) Chill the bars for at least 3 hours.

While the bars are chilling, preheat the to 400 degrees F and cover a baking sheet with aluminum foil. Lay out the strips of bacon on the baking sheet and bake for 17-20 minutes or until crisp. Let bacon drain and completely cool on a paper towel covered plate.

When the bars are chilled, lightly drizzle the surface with honey (they're already very sweet, so don't be heavy-handed), and crumble bacon pieces over the surface (or top with pretzels as desired). Gently use the sling to pull the bars out and cut them on a cutting board. Serve them within a day or two (before the bananas get too brown), storing them in an airtight container in the fridge if needed.

Sally Ride, who in 1983 became the first American woman in space, died Monday.

Born in Encino, Calif., in 1951, Ride attended Stanford University, where she majored in English and physics. After completing her doctorate in physics at Stanford?in 1978, she joined NASA as part of the first cohort of astronauts that admitted women.?

After training for five years, Ride was selected as one of the five astronauts who would rocket into space on the Space Shuttle?Challenger?s STS-7 mission, which lifted off from?Kennedy Space Center, Florida, on June 18, 1983.

"The thing that I?ll remember most about the flight is that it was fun," Ride is quoted on the Sally Ride Science website. ?In fact, I?m sure it was the most fun I?ll ever have in my life.?

Ride would travel into space one more time, in 1984, again aboard the Challenger. She was assigned to a third mission, but after the Challenger exploded shortly after liftoff in 1986, she joined the commission investigating the deadly accident.

Ride retired from NASA in 1987, after which she taught physics at the University of California, San Diego, and authored several science books for children.

In 2001, she founded Sally Ride Science, an education company "dedicated to supporting girls? and boys? interests in science, math and technology."

"Sally Ride broke barriers with grace and professionalism ? and literally changed the face of America?s space program," said NASA Administrator Charles Bolden in a statement. "The nation has lost one of its finest leaders, teachers and explorers. Our thoughts and prayers are with Sally's family and the many she inspired. She will be missed, but her star will always shine brightly."

My Wish ? Sears Perfect Outdoor Evening Entertaining Space

Now that the summer is half way through, there isn?t a better time to rethink your backyard and entertaining outdoor home areas. Here in Florida, I am fortunate to have great outdoor weather 9 months of the year! So to say that I was excited to plan out my wish for the perfect outdoor evening entertaining space for #SummerWithSears, is an understatement, my creative juices were already flowing.

I wished the perfect outdoor entertaining space with Sears Patio

One of the best parts about planning out your space in a ?wishing mode? is there are no limits to your creativity. Why not have the top of the line gas grill along side your 2 entertaining spaces complete with a firepit and fountain? To illustrate my wishing journey I utilized the helpful resources of the Sears Local Ad Deals, Sears online catalog, and the Sears Style Hub which is in a blog format that I love!

Creating my outdoor evening outdoor space

Here is my space I used to start off my Polyvore inspiration board. If you aren?t familiar with Polyvore it is an online resource that enables you to create collages of your favorite decor, ideas, fashion and more. If you can clip it from the web, you can utilize it as an inspiration board. I created my wish inspiration board with items I found in the #SearsPatio online resources.

I chose this space for its evening entertaining opportunities ? looks dark, but I will brighten it up!

I found my lounging furniture, firepit, grill and bistro seating, and even lanterns and bubbling fountains for ambiance! Here?s how I created my ideal outdoor entertaining space. When I think of outdoor entertaining I think of the magic of the nighttime. There is something to be said about friends and family enjoying great food and beverages in the comfort of a beautiful backyard setting.? So I set out to create a scene where you could feel the warmth and magic of the evening.

The list helped me envision my space in an orderly fashion, without having to make a commitment. I encourage you to try this when trying to make a wish list in planning out your next design area of your home.

In my Google+ album I share step ? by- step my experience with the Sears online tools, how I chose my pieces, and I pointed out the great features, and a few areas that I found could be improved.

I headed over to the Sears Local Ad Deals to determine which pieces I liked.

From the helpful navigation to the direct links to the Sears online site, I easily could envision my outdoor space, page by page.

When I saw this set from Country Living, I knew this was the mood I wanted to create. Evening entertaining can be a challenge because landscaping and outside amenities can get lost from view because it is dark. That?s why subtle lighting in the forms of candles, lanterns, string lights in adjacent trees, and a firepit can provide just the right amount of light to create a magical ambiance without feeling overpowering from your entertaining scene.

I loved this setting, plenty of warmth from the firepit but also in the ambiance with subtle lighting. Perfect for my inspiration for my board.

One of the resources I enjoyed while searching through the Sears online tools was the Grilling is Happiness and the Sears Style Hub. I?ve always felt that a blog-type platform from brands is important. It gives helpful lifestyle tips for grilling ideas, entertaining, and making your outdoor home welcoming without being overwhelming for you to plan.

Chef and TV Host, George Hirsch shows you great tips in You Tube videos that are short, but helpful in choosing the right furniture, and accessories for your next event. Here?s my favorite Sears You Tube Video:

The Grilling is Happiness blog had helpful tips to think about before planning my space. For example eating areas and where the food is prepared should be considered before placing your patio furniture and grill. Your grill should be placed away from guests so the smoke doesn?t bother them, but close enough to still be able to mingle. Also, areas where people want to share conversation in a more intimate setting I placed around the firepit, and for those who wanted to sit and eat and be part of the party I placed closer to the grilling area.

From saving money to creative grilling techniques, I especially liked the Grilling is Happiness blog.

Once I had chosen my furniture and accessories I realized my Polyvore setting was very dark, so I chose to bring lanterns, string lights, and my favorite item ? the Electric Garden Oasis chandelier into the scene. This created the warmth I was looking for and it ensured that guests wouldn?t feel in the dark in certain areas of the patio.

Who would of known a chandelier could go outside? This one is offered with the great selection of gazebos. Couldn?t fit the gazebo in my Polyvore board!

The most useful tool of all the resources was the Patio Finder. It gave you an idea of the brands, styles, colors of the patio furniture at one time. I was able to quickly narrow down my choices for seating. They also have a cushion and grill finder to help anyone makeup their minds!

Obama, Romney jab anew, foreign affairs at fore

RENO, Nev. (AP) ? Their goodwill moment gone, President Barack Obama and challenger Mitt Romney plunged back into their acrimonious political campaign on Monday, Obama doubting Romney's readiness to be commander in chief, Romney accusing the president's team of offering "almost all attack ads."

Days after the Colorado movie massacre brought reflection and talk of national unity from both camps, the fight was on again.

Foreign affairs made a rare move to the fore of the campaign as Republican Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, readied for a closely watched trip overseas. Obama, meanwhile, told a military audience that he was the only one in the race with a record, not just words, on international matters as he sought to undercut Romney's travels before they began.

Both White House contenders are trying to gain the military vote. In the 2008 election, 54 percent of those who said they had served in the military voted for Sen. John McCain, himself a veteran, to 44 percent for Obama, according to exit polls.

More broadly, both sides ended what had been a weekend of political truce in deference to grieving families and victims of the shooting. Obama and Romney returned to raising millions of dollars and taking jabs at each other over jobs, leadership and security.

Both saw little time to waste in a tight, bruising race ? and saw little need to apologize for any tactics.

A positive campaign "really would be nice," Romney said even as he declared that sentiment over in an interview with CNBC. He blamed Obama for the tenor.

Obama told the Veterans of Foreign Wars he has kept his promises to end the war in Iraq, wind down the conflict in Afghanistan and go after al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden wherever he was hiding. The terrorist mastermind was killed in a raid on Obama's orders.

In every example, Obama poked at Romney without naming him. On Iraq, Obama suggested Romney would have kept forces in the war zone indefinitely.

"When you're commander in chief, you owe the troops a plan," Obama said. On Afghanistan, Obama needled Romney for opposing the 2014 timeline for ending the war. "You know what? That's not a plan for America's security," he said.

Romney was to get his say before the VFW, too, on Tuesday before setting out for England, Israel and Poland.

Trying to set the expectations for the opponent, Obama campaign officials challenged Romney to offer clear policy ideas during his three-country trip. Romney's travels will be viewed as a measure of how well he can stand up on the world stage. Obama took an even broader such trip as a candidate in 2008.

Four years later, Obama said Monday: "We're leading around the world. There's more confidence in our leadership. We see it everywhere we go."

A Romney spokesman, Ryan Williams, countered that Obama had "diminished our moral authority" in the world.

Still in the shadow of the Colorado rampage, both campaigns weighed how to calibrate their tones.

Obama spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the president was moved by his visits Sunday with survivors and family members of the victims of Friday's mass shooting outside Denver. Still, she said: "We've got a long way to go here. ... (Obama) knows that he needs to make sure people know what's at stake."

Romney noted that Obama aide David Axelrod had begun the day reminding via Twitter of the campaign's request to see more of Romney's tax returns.

"I haven't seen the healthy, important debate coming from the president's team," Romney said. "It's been almost all attack ads on all sorts of peripheral issues."

Romney himself was back at the rhetorical attack, telling donors in California that Obama was "out of ideas and out of excuses."

The pursuit of money kept on rolling, too.

In California, Romney raised $10 million over two days.

Obama moved on to California for a night of fundraisers; Oregon and Washington were next on Tuesday. He was expected to raise more than $6 million.

The president opened remarks to donors at an intimate, $35,800 per person dinner in Oakland by recounting his meetings with those impacted by the Colorado shooting. The spirit of the community, Obama said, "would make you extraordinarily optimistic about America."

Among the donors were two people connected to Solyndra, a failed solar company that has been part of Romney's attacks on Obama. Solyndra was the first renewable energy company to receive a federal grant under Obama's 2009 stimulus law but went bankrupt last year, leaving taxpayers on the hook for more than $500 million.

Steve Westly, a Silicon Valley venture capitalist who warned the White House about Solyndra's shaky finances, and Matt Rogers, a former Energy Department official who was part of the Solyndra loan guarantee process, were among the 60 people in attendance at the private home.

Both campaigns were keeping their largely negative television advertisements off the air in Colorado, a key battleground state in the November election. Vice President Joe Biden, campaigning for his boss in Florida, jettisoned his typical speech to focus on the shooting victims and the stories of heroism from that night.

The Obama campaign on Monday released a new television advertisement casting the election as a choice between two contrasting economic visions.

"Sometimes politics can seem very small. But the choice you face, it couldn't be bigger," Obama said in the ad, which was to air in nine battleground states.
