Hillshire builds executive team with new officer ? - SwineWeb.com ...

Pregnant sows at Elite Pork Partnership, in Carroll, Ia., are kept in gestation crates ? narrow stalls that advocates say let farmers give them individual attention. Critics say the stalls, which don?t allow room for the pigs to turn around, are inhumane.

Craig Rowles grew up on an Iowa farm, and like a lot of farm kids, he?s done his share of heavy lifting.

?I know what that means to carry feed in 5-gallon buckets through the mud and through the snow and through the heat,? he said. ?And I understand what it takes to try to keep animals alive in those extreme kinds of temperatures.?

That?s why he is grateful for gestation crates when it comes to pork production. These narrow cages come with individual feeding and watering troughs and are built over cement blocks with slotted floors to catch manure.

As Rowles sees it, the individual confinement crates make it much easier ? and safer for the animals ? for him and his partners at Elite Pork Partnerships to work with their 8,000 or so sows and their piglets at several farms surrounding Carroll, in western Iowa.

But that?s not how others see it. North America?s largest food distributor, Sysco, recently became the latest company to announce it will phase out pork produced with the controversial technology, which animal rights advocates say is inhumane.

As the outcry builds and more food companies ban the crates, many pork producers worry they?ll be left picking up the tab for an expense they don?t think is necessary ?converting out of gestation crates into a less efficient and less safe production system.

Rowles admits the mama pigs don?t have much room in the gestation crates. But the crates work because sows often become aggressive, hoarding food and putting their neighbors in danger, he said.

?Each of these guys has their own crate and each of the guys has their own feeder,? Rowles said. ?It allows us then to individually feed to the needs of that sow.?

?

Iowa farmer Craig Rowles says his farm uses technology designed to keep the sows cool and comfortable in their confinement crates. It includes a system that blows moist air through the barns.

Most of Rowles? peers in the large-scale hog industry are raising pork this way. In a recent?University of Missouri survey of major producers, 83 percent said they keep pregnant sows in gestation stalls.

But Josh Balk, of the Humane Society of the United States, said consumers want that to change.

?Confining animals in a cage so small they can?t turn around is clearly indicative of a system that treats animals as machines and commodities rather than living beings that have a capacity to suffer and feel pain,? Balk said.

The Humane Society negotiated the agreement with Houston-based Sysco to phase out gestation stalls. Major chains including McDonalds and Burger King have made similar announcements this year.

Sysco, which mostly supplies food to restaurants and cafeterias, hasn?t spelled out a timeline, but it said it will work with producers to move toward group housing that gives animals more room to move.

Some farmers are already doing that. Paul Willis of Thornton, Iowa is the founder and manager of Niman Ranch Pork Co., a national network of 700 farmers that raise pork, as well as beef and lamb without antibiotics or hormones. His hogs live in barns in groups, and sows are allowed to make nests before they give birth.

Willis said some of the problems with group housing, like one sow dominating the others, can be avoided through careful management, like spreading the food out and giving the animals plenty of space. He has never used gestation crates, which he calls ?disgusting? and ?inhumane.?

?I didn?t want to raise pigs like that,? Willis said. ?To put an animal in a box, to me, was not allowing the animal to be who they are.?

David Maloni, president of the American Restaurant Association research group, said more consumers are demanding products raised with methods seen as more natural and humane.

?Food seems to ? need to have a story to it. And whether that?s non-stalled pork, whether that?s Angus beef, whether that?s organic vegetables, or free-range chicken,? Maloni said. ?One thing that?s very interesting is that it helps a restaurant chain differentiate themselves.?

Maloni said restaurant patrons interested in those products generally will spend up to 20 percent more for them.

But Chris Novak, chief executive officer of the National Pork Board, said transitioning the entire industry would have huge costs, from building new pens to lost productivity ? and producers would absorb those costs at first.

?They (animal rights advocates) don?t necessarily have a true understanding of the animal welfare benefits that gestation stalls provide,? he said. ?For many of our producers this is a choice between a system that they had many years ago that they moved away from to provide better protection and care for animal.?

In 2010,?researchers at the University of Minnesota found no difference in productivity?between stalls and larger pens. But they also concluded that a quick transition, in this case over a two-year period, could cost the industry between $1.87 billion and $3.24 billion.

A 2007 study by Iowa State University which was partially funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, found that sows with more space had more pigs per litter, and roomier housing was actually cheaper to build. But it noted that pork producers would need to learn new skills to adapt to a new system.

Still, farmers like Craig Rowles insist every animal-housing system has its pros and cons; he said the quality of care all comes down to the people providing it. ?Rowles said his main focus is on his employees and customers.

?I mean I have a black lab at home and he?s my pet. And I love Cooper. He?s a great dog and he?s my pet,? Rowles said. ??These animals here are our charge; they are our moral and ethical responsibility to care for them in the very best way that we know how.

?But we also have to remember what we are really doing is producing a product ? a meat protein product for people who need food. That?s what we do here.?

Observe Children's Eye Health and Safety ... - Best Self Magazine

By Kaylyn Hinz

As the summer comes to a close and children head back to school. It is very important to get their eyes checked. Since UV rays are still strong in the month of August, it is known for being Children?s Eye Health and Safety Month.

According to the Centers for Disease Control only one in three children in America have ever received eye care services before age six, even though more than 12.1 million school aged children have some form of vision problem.

Being that children are outside more than adults they are more prone to UV ray eye damage. Here are some sunglasses picking tips to insure your child?s eyes are protected at all times.
1. Purchase sunglasses that offer UV protection.
2. Make sure the sunglasses fit the child?s face and shield the eyes from all angles.
3. Choose lenses that are impact resistant.
4. If they do not want to wear sunglasses insist on them wearing a brim hat.

Visit www.preventblindness.org for more eye protection information.

Better Questions Lead to Change Management ? PIHRAeScope Blog

Better Questions Lead to Change Management
By Martha Finney
(on behalf of the PIHRA Foundation)

Researchers and IT professionals know this simple, but profound, truth: Better questions lead to better answers. Do your own people know this? The question they bring to you may not be the question that will lead them to the success scenario that would really help your organization fulfill its potential.? So, as a leader tasked with taking your company to a better future (the ultimate better ?answer?), one of your responsibilities is to make very sure that your people are asking the absolute best questions they can.

That?s change leadership, which elevates your role in the company far above change management (which all your competitors are focusing on; too bad for them).? This is going to take some nerve on your part. So Jeff Nally, Organization Developer?Executive Coaching for Humana, Inc., offers these keys to breakthrough change leadership:

Slow down by asking powerful exploratory questions.? Instead of immediately diving into the presenting problem, ask your people, ?How clear is your thinking about this issue right now?? ?On a scale of 1 to 10, how big a priority is this for you right now? What would make it a 10 for you?? ?Cast yourself into the future, three weeks from now. Do you expect this to be as important then as it feels to you now?? ?What new ideas have you already had that you would do well to acknowledge before you figure out what other solutions there might be to this immediate problem??

Make sure that their assumptions are up to date, not stuck in yesterday. Remind them (and keep in mind yourself) that so much is changing in business so quickly, that yesterday?s critical variables could be completely irrelevant today.? What old assumptions, experiences, facts, or feelings are they carrying forward to the current day that no longer exist or might be holding them back in some way? What is the negative dominant logic that they can set aside or get rid of entirely so that they can have fresh thinking about the problems before them today?

Help all your employees (not just your leaders) refresh their thinking around who they are, what direction their career is going in, what will fulfill them.? The question, ?What do you really want?? might result in a sardonic laugh and immediate response, ?to hold on to my job.?? Granted, depending on what?s going on in your company and market at the time, that might be the best instant response. But as soon as you can get people to look up from the initial problem, be their coach to improve their own thinking about their crucial decisions around career and life.? This could be your most valuable tool for engaging people and retaining your essential talent for the long run.

Don?t just manage change. Lead it. Use these keys to lead your organization?s approach to planning its future.? And you?ll probably find that your own career blossoms as old questions make way for exciting answers to new ones.

College officials fill in during Hall of Fame contest

CANTON, Ohio (AP) -- A crew of officials with college experience worked the Hall of Fame game Sunday night, filling in for regulars who are locked out in a labor dispute with the NFL.

It was a glimpse of what's to come if the NFL and the officials' union fail to reach an agreement before the season openers. And it didn't take long to have a gaffe.

Craig Ochoa, who has worked Big Ten games, was the referee for the game between the New Orleans Saints and the Arizona Cardinals. Ochoa has eight years of experience in BCS conferences and 16 years officiating Division III games.

He flipped a commemorative coin at midfield to start the game, then incorrectly announced the result to the crowd, saying that New Orleans had won the toss and deferred.

Then, starting to walk away, he caught his mistake.

"Correction, Arizona won the coin toss,'' he said.

The fill-ins had several rough moments.

After New Orleans scored on its first possession, several Saints came in to block for the extra point and gestured to the officials to point out that they had reported for the play. Coming out of the 2-minute warning in the first half, Ochoa announced that the previous play was under review, then corrected himself and said it was not.

The officials had trouble spotting the ball after a punt that involved a penalty, repeatedly moving the ball after consultations and a discussion with Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt.

"We made so many mistakes out there, I am in no position to critique anyone,'' Whisenhunt said.

The Saints won the game 17-10. Even though both teams used their full rosters, there were only six penalties marked off for 34 yards.

"Hey listen, it was their first game, just like it was my first game, just like it was our team's first game,'' Saints interim coach Joe Vitt said. "Everybody's getting the rust off. I thought the flow of the game was good. Hey, it was fine.''

The other five officials also have worked college games. Most of them also have experience in other professional leagues, such as the Arena League.

Umpire Timothy Morris has worked 16 years in BCS conferences, including the Pac-12. Head linesman Kevin Akin has six years in Division II. Line judge Esteban Garza has one year in Division III. Field judge Rusty Spindel had 25 years in BCS conferences. Side judge Dwayne Strozier has worked 12 years in Division III. Back judge Mark Wetzel has five years in Division II.

Commissioner Roger Goodell said Saturday that the league and the officials' union had talks last week. The NFL has been training replacement officials for a couple of months to be ready for preseason games and the regular season, should the sides fail to reach an agreement.

The league also used replacements for the opening weekend of the 2001 season, then reached a deal with the officials' union.

What is Outlook.com and how can I use it? | Business Productivity

Last week, July 31st, Microsoft introduced the preview of Outlook.com, a new web based email service that will eventually replace Microsoft?s current offering Windows Live Hotmail. It?s not easy to keep track of all the email offerings that are available out there, in addition to the many offerings from Microsoft, there are also numerous other alternatives from other large players in the market. In this week?s blog article I wanted to shed some light on various email services and tell you more about Outlook.com.

Free email from a range of different providers

If you want to set up an email account you can easily do so, without paying a cent, by picking among a large list of email providers. Perhaps the most well-known ones are Microsoft?s Windows Live Hotmail, Google?s Gmail, Yahoo mail, Aol mail and Apple?s iCloud email. ?In addition to these, there are a number of other email providers that offer email accounts with ample storage available for free. These include, among others, GMX, mail.com and Zoho mail. More and more people have also started to use social networks such as Facebook for email.

Email client offerings from Microsoft

Microsoft offers a wide range of different email services for consumers and businesses as well as numerous email clients. Some email clients are web based where you access your email through a browser, others are rich desktop clients that you install on your PC. The rich clients need an Internet connection to send and receive email, but you can read and write email even if you are offline since these desktop clients save a local copy of your email on your computer. These clients are also richer and faster in functionality, so searching, filtering, spell checking, etc. is quicker since they are not limited to what is possible to do in a browser. ?Here is a summary of email clients that are available from Microsoft, some target businesses, others consumers:

Windows Live Hotmail (web based) ? Microsoft acquired Hotmail in 1997 and launched it shortly after as MSN Hotmail. Since then there have been numerous updates to the interface. Windows Live Hotmail is targeted at consumers and has over 300 million users worldwide. Now that Microsoft has introduced Outlook.com, users will be encouraged to switch over to the new service (they can still keep their email Live/Hotmail address).

Outlook.com (web based) ? Microsoft?s new email service that was introduced last week. The new interface is more professional and the ads are less intrusive. ?See more in the next section on what?s new.

Outlook Web App (web based) ? Microsoft?s web client for business users which is available to users who have Microsoft Exchange Server (either as a standalone server, hosted, or as part of Microsoft Office 365).

Windows Live Mail (desktop client) ? Previously Microsoft offered a desktop client called Outlook Express which was a free, stripped down version of Microsoft Outlook. Outlook Express no longer exists; today the desktop client that is targeted for consumers is called Windows Live Mail. Windows Live Mail is part of Windows Live Essentials which is free if you have a valid license of Windows Vista or Windows 7.

Microsoft Outlook (desktop client) ? Microsoft Outlook is Microsoft?s flagship email client, a rich desktop application for professional email management. It is included in most editions of Microsoft Office (except Office Home and Student Edition). In addition to using Microsoft Outlook with email servers such as Exchange Server, you can also use Microsoft Outlook as an email client for your Windows Live Hotmail email account using the Microsoft Office Outlook Hotmail Connector. ?

What is new with Outlook.com?

On July 31st 2012, Microsoft announced the preview of Outlook.com, the new email service that will eventually replace Windows Live Hotmail. You can start using the preview today by signing up for a new email account (NameOfChoice@outlook.com), or by using an already existing email account. Here is a quick overview of what?s new:

1. Cleaner interface ? Just like the Microsoft Office 2013 Preview, Outlook.com has a cleaner, smoother, ?Metro/Windows 8- style? interface. Small, cluttered menus have been replaced by larger, more graphical icons.

2. Less annoying ads ? Unlike the ads in Windows Live Hotmail, the ads in Outlook.com are very discrete so they don?t annoy you as much. Only if you hover over them do you see the images of the ads.

3. Integrated with social networks ? Outlook.com integrates with social networks like facebook and LinkedIn so you can see status updates, profile pictures and messages from your network contacts all in one place.

4. Integrated with Skype ? Though not available in the preview, Outlook.com will be integrated with Skype so that you can communicate with your contacts in real-time using instant messaging, voice- and video calls through Skype.

5. Integrated with SkyDrive and Office Web Apps ? Outlook.com is tightly integrated with Office Web Apps and SkyDrive (you can read more about SkyDrive in the blog post What is Microsoft SkyDrive and how can I benefit?) This makes it easier to share documents and pictures without having to send them as huge attachments. In addition to the benefits of reduced email size, the viewing experience of photos in slideshow mode is very appealing.

What?s in it for me?

I recommend that everyone has a personal email address that is separate from your business email address. All communication with friends and family should go via this email account. Personally I have a Windows Live Hotmail account that I use for all personal communication as well as for online purchases and newsletters I sign up for. I use the Microsoft Office Outlook Hotmail Connector and I manage both my personal and businesses email using Microsoft Outlook. Even so, I see a lot of value in the new Outlook.com service. I hardly ever use the Windows Live Hotmail web client, but now, with the new interface and the new functionality of Outlook.com I see myself using it more frequently. In addition to the more professional interface, it also adds a lot of great functionality for sharing pictures, managing email rules and connecting with people on social networks.

NASA's Curiosity Rover Lands Safely on Mars

The elaborate landing of the $2.5-billion mission went off without apparent incident

The seven minutes of terror are over.

NASA's Curiosity rover touched down safely on the surface of Mars early Monday morning, Eastern Daylight Time, sticking the landing in what had been one of the most anticipated?and feared?arrivals in the history of robotic planetary exploration.

The 900-kilogram rover autonomously navigated its landing sequence, slowing from 21,000 kilometers per hour at the top of the atmosphere to a dead stop on the surface, with nary an apparent hitch. The elaborate process, which involved a detachable heat shield, a supersonic parachute and finally a hovering sky crane that lowered the rover to the surface, had been branded the "seven minutes of terror" in a NASA video released in June. In the end, based on preliminary data at least, the fears were for naught.

"It looked good, in short," said entry, descent and landing engineer Adam Steltzner in a post-landing news conference. "Good and clean."

The data from the descending rover were relayed to Earth by the Mars Odyssey orbiter, which passed nearby as Curiosity executed its landing sequence. On NASA TV Steltzner could be seen pacing in front of his workstation in the control room at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). But each successive step of the landing sequence passed by without incident, and finally a mission controller announced words that caused the room to erupt in cheers: "Touchdown confirmed. We are safe on Mars."

Within minutes Curiosity relayed its first images of the Red Planet, beaming back a low-resolution shot of one of its six wheels. A higher-resolution version followed, along with a photograph of the rover's own shadow cast across the Martian soil.

In a nearly two-year, $2.5-billion mission, the rover will explore Gale Crater, a basin with a towering mound of sedimentary layers. The mission should help determine what Mars was like during an earlier, wetter era billions of years ago, and whether the planet could have once been hospitable to extraterrestrial life.

The three-meter-long, two-meter-tall rover comes equipped with 10 science instruments, including an onboard sample analysis unit for assessing the chemistry of rock and soil samples and a laser that can vaporize small regions of rocks several meters away to analyze their composition. Curiosity's unprecedented science payload draws its power from a radioisotope thermoelectric generator, a 4.8-kilogram plutonium fuel source whose radioactive decay provides heat, which devices called themocouples convert to about 110 watts of electricity.

"Nobody has ever done anything like this," John Holdren, the White House science adviser, told NASA TV. "This is by far the most capable device, set of instruments, we've put up there for determining whether Mars ever could have supported life."

Nobody had ever attempted anything like the sky crane?enabled landing, either. But some saw good omens, even before the seven minutes of terror had begun. At the post-landing news conference, JPL Director Charles Elachi said he had stepped outside to look at Mars in the evening sky shortly before the landing sequence commenced. "In an hour and a half, you're going to have a visitor," Elachi said as he gazed to the west, he recalled. "And the planet smiled."

Linemen lead charge into Hall of Fame

CANTON, Ohio (AP) ? Willie Roaf was in an unfamiliar role ? the center of attention in front of a large crowd, being singled out for something good.

No, make that: Something great.

With current Saints players standing and cheering, the former New Orleans offensive tackle led a charge of linemen into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday night, a six-man induction that tilted toward those who relish the less-than-glorious role.

Four linemen were included ? Roaf, Chris Doleman, Cortez Kennedy and Dermontti Dawson, along with running back Curtis Martin and 1950s cornerback Jack Butler.

Roaf led it off with a speech short and humble, fitting someone who played a stellar career appreciating the scrums rather than the spotlight.

"You know, it's an offensive lineman," said Roaf, who was very hard to get around on the field. "I didn't get singled out in front of a large audience very often, and when I did, it was usually by a referee who was singling me out by saying, 'Holding No. 77.'

"That's not going to happen today. And it wasn't too often when I played."

Roaf was one of the greatest players in Saints history, so good that he regularly made the Pro Bowl even though New Orleans had only one winning season in his nine years there. His induction gave the franchise something to celebrate after an offseason clouded by its bounty scandal.

Saints players sat in the last three rows of seats on the field, wearing black t-shirts with Roaf's No. 77 on the back. They're in town to play Arizona in the Hall of Fame preseason game on Sunday night.

After Roaf left the podium, the rest of the enshrinement acquired a strong Pittsburgh flavor.

And, in the end, Martin brought the audience to tears.

The Patriots and Jets running back described his life growing up in a rough Pittsburgh neighborhood ? in a household where his father tortured his mother by setting her hair on fire and burning her legs with cigarettes.

His mother was tough on him, urging him to play football to stay out of trouble. It helped him survive and thrive.

"My greatest achievement in my life was helping my mother and nurturing my mother," he said.

Martin started 119 consecutive games with the Patriots and Jets, ending his career as the league's fourth all-time rusher. He joined Barry Sanders as the only runners to start their careers with 10 consecutive 1,000-yard seasons.

Martin had former coach Bill Parcells introduce him Saturday, recognizing his role in shaping his life. Martin followed Parcells from New England to the Jets.

"He has tremendous compassion for his fellow man," Parcells said. "He is, I think, the poster child for what the NFL is supposed to be. You come into the league, maximize your abilities, you save your money, you make a smooth transition into society and then you pass all those things on to other people. That's what this guy has done."

Martin's story changed the mood from celebratory to thoughtful.

Hundreds of Steelers fans filled the field and stands, waving yellow "Terrible Towels" to celebrate the city's starring role in the evening. Two of the new Hall of Famers played for the Steelers ? Butler and Dawson. Like Martin, Doleman played at Pitt.

No one is more popular in Pittsburgh than Dawson, who succeeded Mike Webster as the Steelers' center, then followed him into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He played in 170 consecutive games, reached the Pro Bowl seven straight seasons, and led the way for Jerome Bettis to become one of the NFL's top rushers.

In many ways, Dawson followed Webster's lead.

"Mike was a leader whether he wanted to (be) or not because he led by example, and I tried to emulate everything Mike did," Dawson said. "Mike had a profound impact on my life and even today, I try to lead by example and be like Mike."

Dawson chose high school football coach Steve Parker to present him. If not for Parker, he might not have played the game. Dawson had a bad experience playing the sport in middle school and quit.

Parker met him in a hallway of their high school during his junior year and made him rethink.

"I came across this person who I thought was a man," Parker said. "I said to him, 'Sir, may I help you?' He said he goes to school here, and I said, 'Where have you been all my life?'"

Doleman also traces his football roots to Pennsylvania, where he grew up and went to college. He recalled that his father had one rule: Finish what you start.

"Thank you for teaching me the importance of finishing what you started," Doleman said. "And if it's any indication today, I finished the game I signed up for."

Kennedy has something of a bond with Roaf. Like the offensive tackle from New Orleans, the defensive tackle from Seattle excelled on bad teams. It was his sustained excellence ? not his team's success ? that got him into the hall.

Kennedy grew into the game's top defensive tackle during his 11 seasons with Seattle, able to stop the run or rush the quarterback. Even though Seattle went 2-14 in 1992 and Kennedy got double-teamed, he was so good that he was chosen the league's best defensive player.

Butler, inducted second, took the most unexpected path to the hall. He didn't play football in high school, picked the game in college at St. Bonaventure and entered the NFL as an undrafted player in 1951, just another player filling out the Steelers roster.

Butler, now 84, thanked his family and friends for being in Canton for his long-awaited moment.

"Heck, I'm thankful I'm here," he said. "I thank you all."

Texas Football 2012: Mack Brown Fall Camp Press Conference

Mack Brown will meet the press this afternoon at 3:00 p.m. central time. As with all of his pressers, you can watch the streaming action live on TexasSports.TV or on the Longhorn Network.

Time to R.I.S.E. and shine boys and girls. Football officially kicks off today with the annual Mack Brown fall camp press conference. Entering his 15th season (yes, you read that right) as head football coach of The University of Texas Longhorns, Coach Brown will give a state-of-the-program review and a typical Q&A session with leading members of the sports press.

Wescott provided us a comprehensive fall camp preview but expect Coach Brown to discuss some behind the scenes newsworthy topics including an update on any attrition and insight into lingering injuries, specifically the status of preseason All-American candidate Jackson Jeffcoat, Paul Hornung Award watch candidate Quandre Diggs, and the on-again/off-again status of redshirt sophomore wideout John Harris.

Star-divide

It would not surprise me to hear him mention the contributions of the latest staff addition, Assistant Athletic Director/Sports Dietician, Dr. Amy Culp.

While asked and answered on numerous occasions, expect a question about the offseason troubles of Kenny Vaccaro and Alex Okafor. Hopefully he will be able to once and for all put this to rest.

We'll learn about the "heated" battle for QB and who, right now, are taking the club house leadership duties by the horns.

Much of the above will be regurgitated from Big 12 media days and the luncheon circuit.

Finally, a significant amount of time will be spent on the unbelievable events surrounding recruiting that occurred last Thursday, his change in philosophy, and the potential impacts of this new recruiting paradigm moving forward. SBN's Bud Elliot has a great primer on this topic.

Fall camp officially kicks off Sunday as players report with a shells and shorts day.

T-minus 27 days until football at DKR.

Join us here for live presser action.

FAQ: What do you think about this $250k investment plan? | Gold ...

Q: What do you think about this 0k investment plan?

So I?m in Toronto. I was struggling for some time now. This is pretty much love money from my parents, I feel very depressed when I realize that I?m spending more than I?m making.

Right now $ 200k is in form of physical gold and $ 50k in cash. My family has 0 tolerance for risk. I have a sales job and a base pay of only $ 25k, everything else is commission. My paycheck after taxes is $ 1650 per month.

I want to have a savings cushion is case someone gets sick or looses a job. So I want to buy a $ 200k apartment and have a $ 1000k per month mortgage, using gold as a collateral potentially. Spend $ 20k fixing it up. Make a nice shower room, quite windows, more sound insulation. The most important thing is that the building is solid and has no wood support beams. Than $ 30k will get invested into stocks that I can keep for like a decade.

Even if this apartment blows up or my future wife takes it, there will be little invested into it because it will be a 25 year mortgage; and I would have been paying $ 1000 rent anyway.

So in the end I will be invested into property, gold, stocks. Even if Apocalypse happens I can easily sell one of the assets to back up another. Or take my gold and hide in Mexico. My goal is to wait through the recession and have a 7 digit bank account by 30. Now I?m 25.
Now my rent alone is $ 800. I?m looking into moving up to $ 1000. Either I pay rent or mortgage. I have a business degree and good experience I?ll always be able to find another job. And I like having a modest lifestyle.

Goldsenze Answer:

Ignore your huge cash reserves for a moment. Even with a safety net that size, $ 1000 per month is too large a part of your paycheck. You won?t have much left in your pocket after utilities, food and expenses. You may be used to living on very little, but you shouldn?t have to keep living on very little or drawing from your savings. All you?d have to show for your hard work would be a nice condo, with no lifestyle to speak of and no new investments from your leftover pay.

Think more modestly until your work and investments start to pay off. Loan guidelines say your mortgage payment should be no more than 28% of your gross pay, which probably means a loan closer to $ 100,000 for you.

Milwaukee Business Networking Opportunities: LinkedIn and ...

By Andre? Andropolis

You?re a hardworking small business owner or professional of some sort. Perhaps even a high-ranking executive. You clearly see the value of LinkedIn, and have built up a great profile on that site in order to better sell yourself and your business. Quality referrals, testimonials, and private messages are flying back and forth between you and your LinkedIn connections.

But just how much information are you putting on your LinkedIn profile, either about yourself or about your business?

With each detail of yourself or your business on LinkedIn, the risks of identity theft entering your life increases exponentially. And it?s not just yourself that can fall victim to identity theft. Your business entity can certainly fall prey to it, as well. Fortunately, there are some easy strategies you can immediately implement in order to reduce the risks of identity theft as a result of your LinkedIn presence:

  • Use your best judgment when confirming connections - many people are ?open networkers? and will connect with just about anyone. While that isn?t necessarily a bad thing, and can perhaps even present more quality opportunities to you, approach these connections with some degree of skepticism.
  • Don?t list any of your birth information
  • Check your LinkedIn profile?s privacy settings, and adjust them accordingly, if necessary
  • Don?t list your home address
  • If you put something online, whether it's on LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Youtube, Pinterest or Flickr, it's public, permanent and exploitable
  • Change your LinkedIn password frequently, incorporating a diverse variety of letters in both cases, numbers, and any symbols the system will allow you to use
  • Don?t use this same password for multiple online accounts

While LinkedIn, and any social media profile, for that matter, has the potential to offer you great opportunity by providing you with a forum to share with countless others who you are and what you do, it is imperative to exercise caution. All it takes is a hacker with a little know-how to take some of the information from your LinkedIn profile and use it to open accounts of all kinds, credit cards, and so on, in either your name or your company?s. Before you know it, you find yourself experiencing identity theft and locked in a tough, uphill battle to clear your good name.

Fortunately, there are easy strategies that you can implement this very moment to reduce your risks of identity theft. Take these first steps now. You?ve worked too hard and have come too far to not take a few moments out to give yourself added protection and peace of mind.

(AP) ? Michael Phelps is turning his final Olympics into quite a victory lap, and don't fret about American swimming after he's gone.

Led by a pair of high schoolers, the post-Phelps era will be in very good hands.

In what amounted to a symbolic changing of the guard Friday, Phelps claimed the 17th gold medal of a career that has just 24 hours to go ? on the same night one teenager, Missy Franklin, broke a world record in the backstroke and another, Katie Ledecky, took down a hallowed American mark that was set nearly eight years before she was born.

"This has sort of turned into the youth Olympics," Franklin said. "There's so many members of the team that are coming up this year that are going to carry on this incredible generation."

Incredible, indeed.

His long arms whirling through the water, Phelps was seventh at the turn in 100-meter butterfly ? it always takes him a while to get up to speed ? but he brought it home like a champion. That, in a sense, sums up his Olympics farewell. He got off to a sluggish start but has three victories in the past four days, and it's almost certain he'll take home one more gold Saturday.

That's a relay.

This was the final race he'll do alone.

"I'm just happy that the last one was a win," said Phelps, who will likely fade into retirement with twice as many golds as anyone else. "That's all I really wanted coming into the night."

He'll finish up swimming the butterfly leg of 4x100 medley relay, an event the U.S. men have never lost. That streak should carry right on with the Americans sending out an imposing quartet that includes three gold medalists (Phelps, freestyler Nathan Adrian and backstroker Matt Grevers), plus a guy who won bronze (breaststroker Brendan Hansen).

It's unfathomable to think the Phelps era could end with anything less than a performance that puts him atop the podium one last time, gold medal No. 18 around his neck.

"I don't think Michael is going to let anything go wrong in that race," said Eric Shanteau, who swam the relay for the U.S. in the prelims.

Just minutes before Phelps took center stage at the Olympic Aquatics Centre, Franklin set a world record in the 200 backstroke, the 17-year-old's third gold in London. Another American teen, 19-year-old Elizabeth Beisel, claimed the bronze in that race.

"I can't believe what just happened," said Franklin, who had dedicated her Olympics to victims of the theater shooting not far from her Colorado home. "In that last 25, I knew I was giving it everything I had because I couldn't feel my arms and legs and I was just trying to get my hand to the wall as fast I could."

Right after Phelps was done, Ledecky ? the youngest member of the U.S. team at 15 ? nearly broke the world record to win gold in the 800 freestyle, denying Britain's Rebecca Adlington a repeat before her home fans. Adlington settled for bronze in a race Ledecky dominated from start to finish, falling off record pace only in the last 15 meters.

But no one has dominated like Phelps, who increased his career overall medal total to 21.

"He's the king of the Olympics Games," said his butterfly rival, Serbia's Milorad Cavic.

Even though Phelps didn't go as fast in the final as he did in the semifinals, he actually won by a relatively comfortable margin compared to his two previous Olympic wins in the 100 fly: four-hundredths of a second over Ian Crocker in 2004, then one-hundredth of a second ? the closest race possible ? against Cavic at the Beijing Games four years ago.

That was the victory that kept Phelps on course to win a historic eight gold medals in China.

This was about going out in style.

Phelps slammed the wall in 51.21 seconds for payback against the guy who edged him in the 200 fly, Chad le Clos of South Africa. No gliding into this finish, the move that cost Phelps the gold in their first meeting.

"My start of the meet wasn't what we wanted, but I seemed to pick up some steam at the end of the meet," Phelps said.

He's still in race mode, at least for one more day. Phelps covered the final 50 in 26.86. Le Clos was the only other swimmer to break 27, and three guys couldn't go under 28.

"I thought it would hit me a lot harder than what it is right now," Phelps said. "I guess a lot of those emotions haven't really come through my brain over the last week. Once I'm done and once tomorrow is over, I think there's going to be a lot more emotion that really comes out."

Le Clos finished in 51.44, patting Phelps on the shoulder after tying for silver with Russia's Evgeny Korotyshkin. Cavic tied for fourth in 51.81, not even close to Phelps in their final meeting.

"I cannot be compared to Michael Phelps," said Cavic, who also plans to retire after the London Games. "I'm a one-trick pony."

That's certainly not the case with Franklin, who is swimming seven events in London.

"Missy The Missile" has certainly lived up to her nickname, completing a sweep of the backstroke events in a time of 2 minutes, 4.06 seconds, easily eclipsing the record of 2:04.81 set by defending Olympic champion Kirsty Coventry at the 2009 worlds in a now-banned bodysuit.

Russia's Anastasia Zueva took silver, a body length behind Franklin in 2:05.92. Beisel put a second American on the medal podium in 2:06.55, while Coventry finished sixth.

"I could never dream for it to happen like that," said Franklin, who also has a bronze in her first Olympics and one more race to go in the 4x100 medley relay.

Ledecky seemingly came out of nowhere to make the U.S. team, and nearly took out a world record in her first Olympics. She was ahead of Adlington's record pace (8:14.10) from the Beijing Olympics until right at the end, finally tiring just a bit for a time of 8:14.63.

She settled for crushing Janet Evans' American mark of 8:16.22, set in Tokyo on Aug. 20, 1989.

"I figured I was going pretty fast," Ledecky said.

She has plenty of time to go faster, becoming the second-youngest American swimmer to claim an individual gold medal ? 75 days older than Beth Botsford was when she won the 100 backstroke at the 1996 Atlanta Games.

Mireia Belmonte Garcia of Spain was far behind for silver in 8:18.76, while Adlington held on to take bronze at 8:20.32. She burst into tears on the medal stand as the crowd of 17,000 chanted "Becky! Becky! Becky!"

There was no catching Ledecky.

"Michael's and Missy's races really got me pumped," the youngster said. "I really wanted to see what I could do to represent the U.S."

France won its fourth gold at the pool, building on its best showing ever and denying an American sweep of the night. Florent Manaudou ? younger brother of 2004 gold medalist Laure Manaudou ? shocked defending Olympic champion and world-record holder Cesar Cielo of Brazil in the 50 freestyle.

Manaudou touched in 21.34 and pounded the water out in Lane 7, then got a big hug from his sister as soon as he climbed from the pool. Cullen Jones of the United States took silver in 21.54, while Cielo was left with bronze in 21.59. Anthony Ervin, the 2000 Olympic champion who came back from an eight-year retirement, finished fifth after getting off to a poor start.

"I'm tired," said Cielo, still only 25 but the world's top sprinter for the last four years. "Age takes its effect."

Jones claimed the first individual medal of his career, and vowed to come back even stronger at the 2016 Rio Games.

"I was dreaming in gold and I really wanted to get first, but it wasn't in the cards this time," Jones said. "I'll have to live with silver, and that's enough motivation for another four years."

Ervin seemed flustered by a slight delay in the start because of a woman yelling in the stands. He was slowest off the blocks ? a crucial miscue in the one-lap dash ? and never caught up. He was timed in 21.78, leaving him 0.19 behind Cielo for a spot on the podium.

Still, it's been quite a journey for the eclectic swimmer, who shared the 50 free title with Gary Hall Jr. at the Sydney Olympics, won a world title the following year, then stunningly walked away from the sport at age 22. Ervin was gone for eight years, selling off his gold medal to aid victims of the Indian Ocean tsunami, playing in a band, finishing college and never staying in one place for too long.

Just one year after coming back, the 31-year-old nearly got another Olympic medal.

"Being here is my own form of redemption," he said. "What's next? I'm going to have a nice dinner with my friends and family, people I really care about. Without them, this could not have happened."

PFT: Locked-out ref says integrity of game at risk

espn_g_goodellrefs_600Getty Images

The NFL?s annual Hall of Fame game could launch a period of potential infamy in pro football.

Eleven years after a lockout of the game officials resulted in replacements for one regular-season game, another lockout could expose the game to something less than the best of the best referees and umpires and line judges and head linesmen and back judges and field judges.

Barring a highly unlikely settlement, it all gets started on Sunday night, when the Cardinals face the Saints.

While Commissioner Roger Goodell downplayed the situation during a Friday appearance on The Dan Patrick Show, former NFL V.P. of officiating Mike Pereira has been sounding the alarm.? On Wednesday?s Dan Patrick Show, Pereira reiterated his view that the situation could threaten the integrity of the game.

Pereira, who as Goodell pointed out actually took the striped shirt out of mothballs and got back on the field during the 2001 lockout, explained that the decision of Division I conferences to prevent their guys from moonlighting this time around means that the pool of replacements includes high-school officials, a pair of guys who were fired by the Pac-1o for poor performance, and officials from the Lingerie Football League.

As explained by Pereira, the financial gap between the non-lingerie version of pro football and the regular officials works out to $100,000 per team.? At a time when the Browns are being sold for $1 billion and the Packers have posted a record profit of more than $40 million, it?s hard not to think that the NFL should give.? Maybe not the full $100,000 per team, but enough to get this thing done.

Meanwhile, fans continue to not seem to care.? Many believe that the locked-out officials should be thrown out.? Others possibly aren?t bent out of shape because, if there are bad calls, there?s a chance that the bad calls will favor their favorite teams.

For the fans whose favorite teams are victimized by the bad calls of the third-tier-and-worse officials, the situation could quickly become a problem, starting a month from Sunday when the Cowboys and Giants get together at MetLife Stadium.

Regardless of who?s right and who?s wrong and who blinks and who bends, here?s hoping this gets resolved before the games that count kick off.

MetroPCS announces Samsung Galaxy S Lightray 4G for $459

Galaxy S Lightray 4G

So you want a Samsung Droid Charge, without the monthly contract on Verizon, and with another of the infamous ridiculous names? Well, meet the Samsung Galaxy S Lightray 4G, MetroPCS's version of the Droid Charge which they have just made available. As you know by now MetroPCS offers many devices without contract, and they claim to have a heck of a 4G network that they will give "unlimited" access to for just $40 a month.

Featuring a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display, the screen is sure to grab your attention, and being powered by a 1GHz processor sure doesn't hurt the speed here. With an 8MP camera on the back, and a 1.3MP camera on the front you will easily be able to capture your memories on the go, with nice clean pictures or a video call back home to check on the loved ones. They have opted to include a 16GB card with the device, and it can be expanded up to a 32GB card if you desire, so storing your apps, pictures, videos, or favorite tunes to take with you should be no problem.

Retailing at $459, the Galaxy S Lightray 4G will also be the first smartphone in the U.S. that offers an application to stream live television. (Not really, but that's the company line here.) Dyle will allow customers to stream television while on the go over the 4G network provided by MetroPCS, and with no additional cost. The only big downside is that it is only in some markets at this time, but we hope that will change. This device will also be the first one on MetroPCS to offer the ability to become a mobile hotspot, so if you are looking to be able to get wifi on your favorite Android tablet while on the go, you now can. Be sure to check out their site, and see if this may be your next prepaid device!

Bangladesh bans foreign charities helping Rohingya

Bangladesh has ordered three international charities to stop providing aid to Rohingya refugees who cross the border to flee persecution and violence in Myanmar, an official said Thursday.

France's Doctors without Borders (MSF) and Action Against Hunger (ACF) as well as Britain's Muslim Aid UK have been told to suspend their services in the Cox's Bazaar district bordering Myanmar, local administrator Joynul Bari said.

"The charities have been providing aid to tens of thousands of undocumented Rohingya refugees illegally. We asked them to stop all their projects in Cox's Bazaar following directive from the NGO Affairs Bureau," he told AFP.

Bari said the charities "were encouraging an influx of Rohingya refugees" from across the border in Myanmar's Rakhine state in the wake of recent sectarian violence that left at least 80 people killed.

The charities have provided healthcare, training, emergency food and drinking water to the refugees living in Cox's Bazaar since the early 1990s.

MSF runs a clinic near one of the Rohingya camp which provides services to 100,000 people.

Speaking a Bengali dialect similar to one in southeast Bangladesh, the Rohingyas are Muslims seen as illegal immigrants by the Buddhist-majority Myanmar government and many Burmese.

They are viewed by the United Nations as one of the world's most persecuted minorities.

Golam Sarwar, a senior official of Muslim Aid UK in Bangladesh, confirmed to AFP that his group had stopped its Rohingya project following the order.

The government says some 300,000 Rohingya Muslims are living in the country, the vast majority in Cox's Bazaar, after fleeing persecution in Myanmar. About 30,000 are registered refugees who live in two camps run by the United Nations.

In recent weeks, Bangladesh has turned away boats carrying hundreds of Rohingya fleeing the violence in Myanmar despite pressure from the United States and rights groups to grant them refuge.

Myanmar security forces opened fire on Rohingya Muslims, committed rape and stood by as rival mobs attacked each other during the recent wave of sectarian violence, New York-based Human Rights Watch said Wednesday.

The authorities failed to protect both Muslims and Buddhists and then "unleashed a campaign of violence and mass roundups against the Rohingya", the group said in a report.
