Egypt-based group claims Israel border attack

(AP) ? A shadowy group inspired by al-Qaida and based in Egypt's Sinai peninsula has claimed responsibility for a shootout along the Israeli-Egyptian border in which three militants and an Israeli soldier were killed.

Ansar Jerusalem, in a statement posted on militant forums late Saturday, linked the attack to a video denigrating the Prophet Muhammad that has sparked protests across the Muslim world. It says the militants were Egyptian.

It said the operation was a "disciplinary attack against those who insulted the beloved Prophet." The low-budget film was produced in the United States.

The group said three militants had crossed the border into Israel early Thursday and remained hiding until midday Friday, when they saw and attacked an Israeli patrol.

Brown runs for 2 TDs as Giants rout Panthers 36-7

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) ? Just walking by the parking lot outside the Carolina Panthers' stadium got Andre Brown's blood pumping.

The Panthers, like four other teams since 2009, waived Brown after he failed to make a lasting impression. He's determined that won't happen again and that this time he'll find a home in the NFL with the team that originally drafted him ? the New York Giants.

If he keeps playing like he did Thursday night, he just might.

Brown ran for 113 yards and two touchdowns in leading the Giants to a 37-6 win over the Panthers.

"I'm so happy to come out here," Brown said. "It really humbled me. It really shows that everything is not guaranteed. You know, I'm just going to ride this wave. Hopefully, it's a long wave."

The Giants didn't need a fourth-quarter comeback Thursday night.

Brown, quarterback Eli Manning and the rest of the defending Super Bowl champions finished off the Panthers way before that. Four days after rallying from 14 points down to beat Tampa Bay, New York dominated the first half, scoring on its first four possessions to build a 20-0 lead.

The Giants (2-1) were without three starters but it hardly mattered.

Like Brown, Ramses Barden is hoping to ride a wave of success. Barden caught nine passes for a career-high 138 yards in his first NFL start. He played in place of Hakeem Nicks.

Of course it helps that the guy throwing you the ball is a two-time Super Bowl MVP. Manning completed 27 of 35 passes for 288 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions.

On the other side, second-year quarterback Cam Newton struggled all night and was pressured into three interceptions. The Panthers (1-2) had five turnovers, including two by returner Joe Adams.

Newton had no luck running the read option against the Giants. He was held to 6 yards rushing a week after running for a career-high 71 yards against the Saints.

"We got some licks on him, when he kept the ball, and that's something that was lacking last week," Giants coach Tom Coughlin said. "You have to be disciplined. You have to have people in the right spots, or he'll take full advantage of it."

Panthers coach Ron Rivera likened the loss to a lesson you learn from your big brother.

"They came in and slapped us around and dragged us to the ground a little bit," Rivera said. "Hopefully, we learn from it a little bit. Hopefully, we learn from it and, hopefully, we don't like it and we come back focused."

Mixing run and pass, the Giants dominated the opening half, outgaining the Panthers 303-125.

Manning completed 19 of 25 passes for 208 yards in the first half, including a 14-yard touchdown pass to Martellus Bennett to cap the Giants' opening drive and set the tone. The eight-play, 80-yard drive marked the third straight game the Panthers have given up a touchdown on an opponent's first possession.

For Rivera and the Panthers the first half was a nightmare.

"When you put yourself in a hole like that it's tough trying to claw and scratch yourself back up," Rivera said. "And that's really what happened. That's the type of game they want you to be in. That's trouble. When you get behind they can cut those guys loose on the pass rush."

Brown repeatedly bounced off tacklers and Barden had little trouble getting open against a Carolina defense that failed to pressure Manning.

Brown ran 13 times for 71 yards and a touchdown last week against Tampa Bay and surpassed that total by the end of the first quarter with 77 yards on seven carries.

Barden had 123 yards on seven catches at halftime.

Before Thursday night, the fourth-year receiver had never managed more than nine catches for 94 yards receiving in a season.

"At this level, you never know when you're going to get an opportunity, you've got to be prepared for it," Manning said. "Andre Brown is a great example. He's a guy we drafted, he bounced around, and we brought him back. He was on the bubble to make the team, and here you go. Ahmad (Bradshaw) gets hurt, and he ran great, he pass-protected.

"He did get off to a bit of a shaky start. He went left when he was supposed to run right on the first play. We had a little talk and got him settled down, and after that, he did very, very well."

Any hopes that the Panthers would turn things around in the second half were slowed when rookie returner Adams fumbled trying to catch the opening kickoff, resulting in another field goal for Lawrence Tynes.

Tynes finished with five field goals.

The Panthers didn't get on the board until midway through the third quarter when Newton leaped over the pile from a yard out.

Newton said it wasn't what the Giants did but what the Panthers didn't do.

"Who wants to support something that puts on a performance of embarrassment out there, and that's what that was," Newton said. "If I was a fan of the Carolina Panthers I would be holding my head down in shame at the product that was out there."

NOTES: For the third straight week Carolina receiver Steve Smith sparred with an opposing cornerback during the game. This week's victim was Corey Webster. ... Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart missed his second game of the season because of a toe injury. The Panthers also were without tackle Byron Bell. ... The Panthers honored Olympic gold medal swimmers Cullen Jones and Ricky Berens.

This Monday, Aug. 20, 2012 photo, shows an American Airlines aircraft taking off at Miami International Airport in Miami. American Airlines and American Eagle announed Thursday, Sept. 20, 2012 they will cancel 300 flights this week to cope with a high number of pilots reporting sick and an increase in maintenance reports filed by crews. (AP Photo/Alan Diaz)

(AP) ? With American Airlines canceling dozens of flights every day, passengers with fall travel plans are confronting an inconvenient question: Should they avoid the nation's third-largest carrier because labor strife might cause delays and cancelations?

Several prominent travel gurus say it's too early to "book away" from American. They say the number of canceled flights is still small and that American can find room on other planes for displaced passengers.

The airline expects to cancel up to 2 percent of its total flights through the end of October because of a dispute with pilots. Even if passengers find other flights, it's a setback for American, which is struggling to reverse years of heavy losses.

American executives believe pilots are calling in sick and crews are slowing operations by filing huge numbers of maintenance reports to punish the company for imposing tough cost-cutting measures as part of its bankruptcy reorganization.

The union insists pilots are reporting to work as usual, and it blames the cancelations on company mismanagement and problems with old planes.

American has already canceled 300 flights this week, or 1.25 percent of its schedule. That number is sure to rise. On Sunday and Monday, American scrapped more than 5 percent of its flights.

The percentage of American flights arriving late has ballooned. On Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, fewer than half its flights arrived on time, according to flight-tracking service FlightStats.com.

At midday Thursday, 62 percent of American flights were on time, compared with at least 90 percent at United, Delta and US Airways, FlightStats' figures showed.

Bruce Hicks, a spokesman for parent company AMR Corp. blamed pilot sick leave, which he said is running 20 percent higher than a year ago. There has also been a "significant" increase in pilots calling in maintenance requests, often right before scheduled departure, he added.

Hicks said American has enough pilots and until recently had been posting its best on-time numbers in years. He said the airline was contacting passengers and giving them options such as letting them fly standby on earlier flights at no extra charge.

Former AMR CEO Robert Crandall said passengers will jump to other airlines.

"You can be sure it is happening already," said Crandall, who ran American for 13 years when the airline was known for innovations such as its frequent-flier program and for strikes by union employees. "Every time the pilots pulled a job action, the public books away."

American has a long history of poor labor relations. It endured strikes by flight attendants and pilots in the 1990s. Workers accepted pay cuts in 2003 to keep the company out of bankruptcy, then were enraged when hundreds of management employees received bonuses that for a few topped $1 million.

The tension has increased since AMR filed for bankruptcy protection in November. In April, American's three unions threw their support behind a potential takeover bid from US Airways Group Inc.

While unions for flight attendants and ground workers accepted new cost-cutting measures this year, the 8,000 members of the Allied Pilots Association rejected the company's last contract offer. AMR answered by getting a federal bankruptcy judge's permission to impose new pay and work terms on the pilots that include cuts in benefits and more outsourcing of flying to other airlines.

Union leaders say pilots are angry but aren't sabotaging the company.

"There is no organized sickout that APA is involved in, absolutely not," union spokesman Gregg Overman said.

Statistics provided to the union by American show that 564 pilots, or 7.5 percent, called in sick Tuesday. That's the second-highest rate for the 18th day of each month over the past year, but the sick rate was at least 6 percent in nine other months. It peaked at 9.5 percent in October 2011.

The union blamed this week's cancelations on mechanical delays tied to American's aging fleet ? about 15 years on average, and even higher for the MD-80 planes that make up the backbone of its domestic fleet. Hicks countered that pilots didn't file nearly as many complaints earlier this year, even though the average age of American's planes was about the same.

The union also said that American should have rehired more furloughed pilots.

Other airline unions have expressed their displeasure with management by calling in sick or slowing operations, and some have gotten in trouble.

Last September, a federal judge ordered the union for US Airways pilots to stop disrupting the airline by making sure flights were late. In 2008, a judge determined that United Airlines pilots carried out illegal sickouts and slowdowns and ordered them to stop.

American's pilot union was fined $45 million after a 1999 sickout over bringing in pilots from a low-cost airline that AMR bought. AMR and the union reached a settlement that reduced the union's loss.

In each instance, the airline went to court to force pilots to speed things up. Crandall said American might be forced to do the same thing this time.

"It is perfectly obvious that this is a job action by the pilots," Crandall said. "I think it's childish, it's self-defeating and it's harmful to the company and to other employees."

American is particularly vulnerable to long-term damage if passengers choose other carriers because it is already in bankruptcy and weak compared with bigger rivals United and Delta, he said.

As the week has unfolded, and American posted slightly better on-time arrivals, travel experts advised passengers to wait before they decide to avoid American.

"When people ask, 'Should I book away from American?' I think about whether I'd want my mom getting stranded at (the Dallas-Fort airport) because American canceled her flight home," said Tim Winship, who runs travel website FrequentFlier.com. "I'd tell her to go ahead and book the trip."

Winship's advice is colored by his reluctance to pile on a beleaguered airline.

"They need the business more than ever," he said. "I'd hate to be one of the nails in their coffin."

George Hobica, founder of airfarewatchdog.com and a frequent flier, predicted that American will soon fix the delays and cancelations. He said he's seen company employees trying extra hard to be nice and to help passengers who are bumped or otherwise inconvenienced.

American's predicament comes during one of the slowest travel periods of the year. That will help the airline find new flights for stranded passengers, Hobica said.

"I'm flying on American on Friday," Hobica said, "and I'm not going to change my plans."

Drs. Genova and Weaver received three-year grants totaling more than $660,000 to study ways to improve cognitive function after traumatic brain injury

WEST ORANGE, N.J.Two neuroscientists at Kessler Foundation received grants from the New Jersey Commission on Brain Injury Research. Helen Genova, Ph.D., research scientist in Neuropsychology & Neuroscience Research was awarded a three-year Individual Research Grant totaling $462,103. Starla Weaver, Ph.D., a postdoctoral fellow in Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Research, received a three-year Fellowship Research Grant for $199,764. Kessler Foundation conducts cognitive and mobility rehabilitation research in brain injury, spinal cord injury, stroke and multiple sclerosis.

Nancy Chiaravalloti, Ph.D., director of Traumatic Brain Injury and Neuropsychology & Neuroscience Research, commented, "We are pleased to have the support of the Commission for these important studies. Expanding our knowledge of how TBI affects brain function will help us to devise more effective strategies for cognitive rehabilitation."

Dr. Genova is interested in the long-term cognitive dysfunction that can cause disability after brain injury. While some recover over time, a significant number of individuals show continued impairment and even progressive cognitive decline. The identification of an accurate and reliable predictor of cognitive outcome would help to guide patients and families through the recovery process, but such a predictor has eluded investigators. Dr. Genova will apply a new neuroimaging technique, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), to the study of the cognitive effects of TBI. DTI has proven to be a highly sensitive measure of diffuse axonal injury and white matter integrity, but few studies have applied DTI to the study of cognitive deficits in people more than two years post TBI. Delineating the relationship between diffuse axonal injury and cognitive impairment could transform the initial approach to rehabilitation and enable clinicians to provide patients and families with prognostic information regarding cognitive recovery. Dr. Genova's project is "The longitudinal examination of the relationship between white matter pathology & cognitive impairment in traumatic brain injury using diffusion tensor imaging."

Dr. Weaver's interest is in chronic cognitive deficits that are a major cause of disability after TBI. Her research focuses on executive function, which is the ability to organize thoughts and activities, prioritize tasks, manage time efficiently, and make decisions. Developing rehabilitation interventions that improve executive function will minimize disability and aid performance of daily activities necessary for independent living. Task switching, i.e., the ability to switch between two simple tasks, has been found to be the best predictor of performance of tasks related to executive function. Dr. Weaver will compare the effects of task-switching in individuals with TBI and controls to determine whether this type of intervention can provide lasting benefits. She will use functional MRI to compare patterns of cerebral activation with task switching in both groups. Dr. Weaver's project is "The effects of task switching training on traumatic brain injury."

Drs. Genova, Weaver and Chiaravalloti have faculty appointments in the department of physical medicine & rehabilitation at UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School.
