Zombie warning exposes flaws, say experts

The zombie attack alert issued on a handful of U.S. TV stations this week is more serious than a mischievous hacker prank say cyber experts, who warn the incident exposes lax security practices in a critical public safety system.

While broadcasters said poor password security paved the way for the bogus warning, security experts said the equipment used by the Emergency Alert System remained vulnerable when stations allow it be accessed via the public Internet.

The fear is that hackers could prevent the government from sending out public warnings during an emergency or attackers could conduct a more damaging hoax than a warning of a zombie apocalypse.

"It isn't what they said. It is the fact that they got into the system. They could have caused some real damage," said Karole White, president of the Michigan Association of Broadcasters.

James Barnett, a retired U.S. Navy admiral and former chief of public safety and homeland security for the Federal Communications Commission, told NBC News Wednesday that while the zombie prank was not an act of terrorism, the false message, which spread to other states, demonstrated a real risk.

"Somebody hacked in and did a very good job of making it sound real," Barnett said. "The problem was bad computer hygiene. [Admins] didn't change the passwords, so it was easy for someone to break into it."

Following the attacks on Monday, broadcasters were ordered to change the passwords for the EAS equipment.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) would not comment on the attacks, but in an urgent advisory sent to television stations on Tuesday said: "All EAS participants are required to take immediate action."

It instructed them to change passwords on equipment from all manufacturers used to deliver emergency broadcasts. The FCC instructed them to ensure gear was properly secured behind firewalls and to inspect systems to ensure that hackers had not queued "unauthorized alerts" for future transmission.

Vulnerable
The attacks come after warnings by government officials and outside security experts that the United States is at risk of a cyber attack that could cause major physical damage or even cost lives. President Barack Obama told Congress on Tuesday that some hackers were looking for ways to attack the U.S. power grid, banks and air traffic control systems.

White and her counterpart in Montana, Greg MacDonald, said they believed the hackers were able to get in because TV stations had not changed the default passwords they used when the equipment was first shipped from the manufacturer.

But Mike Davis, a hardware security expert with a firm known as IOActive Labs, said hackers could still get past new passwords to remotely access the systems.

Davis said he had submitted a report to the Department of Homeland Security's U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team, or US-CERT, about a month ago that detailed the security flaws.

"Changing passwords is insufficient to prevent unauthorized remote login. There are still multiple undisclosed authentication bypasses," he told Reuters via email. "I would recommend disconnecting them from the network until a fix is available."

Davis said he was able to use Google Inc's search engine to identify some 30 systems that he believed were vulnerable to attack as of Wednesday morning.

Privately held Monroe Electronics, whose equipment was compromised in Monday's attacks, said it was still evaluating the risks.

"The situation appears to just be the password stuff, but we are looking at anything else and everything that might come into play," Vice President Bill Robertson told Reuters.

A spokesman for US-CERT said he could not immediately comment on the matter.

'Bodies are rising'
The zombie hackers targeted two stations in Michigan, and several in California, Montana and New Mexico, White said.

A male voice addressed viewers in a video posted on the Internet of the bogus warning broadcast from KRTV, a CBS affiliate based in Great Falls, Montana: "Civil authorities in your area have reported that the bodies of the dead are rising from the grave and attacking the living."

The voice warned not "to approach or apprehend these bodies as they are extremely dangerous."

Stuart McClure, chief executive of cyber security firm Cylance Inc, said he had investigated cases in which hackers accessed EAS systems via a different method: breaking into hidden accounts built into the systems by manufacturers so that service technicians can easily access them for repairs.

"You cannot give a separate pass code to everybody. Nobody is going to remember it. You have to share the secret," said McClure, who previously ran a unit at Intel Corp's McAfee security division that investigated cyber attacks.

Electronics industry experts said that it is tough for some broadcasters to follow all security guidelines because staff at small stations lack the expertise to do so.

The equipment that was compromised obtains emergency broadcasts by frequently using the Internet to make outward calls to trusted government servers. When it finds an alert on one of those servers, it broadcasts it on that station.

Monroe Electronics said its gear is designed to let stations make outgoing queries, but still keep outsiders from getting in. It recommends against unsecured access to the Internet. "It's the wild, wild West," said Robertson.

He said the equipment sometimes gets exposed to the open Internet because it is not properly configured or because engineers want remote access when they are on call.

Robertson said the company was working to beef up security on the equipment and might update its software to compel customers to change default passwords.

Federal Emergency Management Agency spokesman Dan Watson said that the zombie breach did not have any impact on the government's ability to activate the Emergency Alert System.

Why Republican delay isn't likely to stop Chuck Hagel confirmation

Republicans vowed to stop Chuck Hagel?s nomination to be the nation?s next secretary of Defense dead in its tracks ? until the end of the month, at least.

Saying that questions about the decorated Vietnam veteran?s finances and former speeches ? not to mention details from the White House about the Benghazi terror attack ? needed to be addressed, Republicans blocked an attempt to move Mr. Hagel's nomination to a vote on the Senate floor.

The vote was 58 to 40 ? with 60 votes needed to overcome a filibuster.

RECOMMENDED: So you think you know Congress? Take our quiz.

But the delay does not mean the end of former Republican senator Hagel's bid. The financial information requested by Republicans should be forthcoming within 10 days or so, and GOP senators insisted that then they'd be willing to move Hagel's nomination to the floor for a vote, where only a simple majority of senators could confirm him for the Pentagon's top job.

Until that day, a trio of Republican senators can continue to blast the White House over its forthrightness concerning the attack on the US consulate in Benghazi, Libya, last Sept. 11.

The Hagel vote was yet another strange chapter in recent congressional history, as the traditions that define the Senate are subtly tweaked. Republican senators swear that they are not, in fact, filibustering the nominee. But Democrats swore the GOP was establishing a dangerous precedent: blocking a national-security nominee for the first time in US history.

Want your top political issues explained? Get customized DC Decoder updates.

Sen. Bob Corker (R) of Tennessee summed up of the position of perhaps a dozen Republican senators in his statement.

?Generally, I believe a president?s cabinet nominee deserves an up-or-down vote in the Senate, but in this case, I believe a number of my colleagues have raised legitimate concerns about information that hasn?t yet been made public and that extending the debate gives more time for these concerns to be addressed,? he said. ?Once sufficient time has passed, I am perfectly open to a 51-vote threshold.?

Hagel's nomination has stalled only days after another Senate veteran, former Sen. John Kerry (D) of Massachusetts, breezed through with minimal discussion en route to his confirmation as secretary of State.

But Hagel, unlike Kerry, had to explain past controversial statements on Israel and Iran ? a defense that he is widely viewed as having fumbled in his confirmation hearings. Moreover, Hagel's criticisms of Iraq policies favored by leading Republican hawks in the Senate appeared to rankle many of those members on a personal level.

The trio of Republican senators most keenly concerned with Benghazi ? Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, John McCain of Arizona, and Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire ? used the Hagel nomination to wring information out of the White House. Among other things, they asked whether President Obama called the Libyan government to ask for help for the embattled consulate. (The answer, it turns out, is ?no.?)

They likely are not finished yet. John Brennan, President Obama?s nominee to head the CIA, might be in for a "Hagel-ing" of his own when his nomination lands in the Senate after the Presidents Day recess.

Senators Ayotte, McCain, and Graham signaled that they would pound Mr. Brennan to find out who changed the talking points delivered to US Ambassador to the UN Susan Rice before her visit to the Sunday talk show circuit shortly after the Benghazi incident. The Republican senators point out that those talking points incorrectly assessed the Benghazi attack on several issues.

?We're going to find out who changed those talking points,? Graham said, ?or die trying.?

Yet Benghazi is not expected to derail Hagel's nomination. Republicans merely say they want more time to get their questions answered.

?It's a time-honored practice,? said McCain, referencing the delay of a nominee to obtain information from the administration, during a discussion with reporters before the vote. ?So the only leverage, honestly, that we have is to gauge our support for the nomination of a nominee on whether [the White House is] forthcoming with information or not.?

Graham added: ?Unless there?s a bombshell? over the next 10 days, ?we will move forward.?

All of this did not amuse Senate majority leader Harry Reid (D) of Nevada.

?Despite unprecedented responsiveness and transparency from the White House, Republicans have constantly invented new pretexts for opposing Senator Hagel?s nomination, and Republicans continued their embarrassing display of disregard for our national security by blocking Senator Hagel?s nomination today," he said. "Some Republican senators have said that they will change their votes, and allow his nomination to proceed at some point in the future. I will take them at their word, and I will hold them to their pledge.?

Joshua Fields Millburn Talks 18-Minute Minimalist Fitness

Whether it?s a lack of time, energy or cash, there are a million excuses that can get in the way of our staying fit. After all, exercise can be difficult to fit into our busy schedules. But self-proclaimed minimalist and best-selling author?Joshua Fields Millburn?is calling bluff on all of those excuses and he?s going to tell you why.

Millburn, 31, shares his ?minimalist? lifestyle on The Minimalists, a blog he co-authors with longtime friend Ryan Nicodemus.

The pair define minimalism as ?a shedding of life?s excess in favor of what?s important,? which allows them to ?spend less time and money on material possessions and focus instead on health, relationships, and pursuing their passions, among other things.?

Minimalism has affected all areas of Millburn?s life, including his fitness routine. Millburn, who once counted himself as ?doughy, flabby and weak? at the age of 28, created a set of simple exercises that require just 18 minutes of his time and yield measurable results. His daily workouts paired with a clean diet have allowed him to shed 70 pounds and be in the best shape of his life.

We spoke with Millburn about how minimalism has affected his view on health and fitness, and how it?s helped propel him toward optimum health.

What inspired you to get healthy??

I felt like crap. I was tired and sluggish and it was harder to enjoy my life. To top it off, I looked like crap, too; I was 70 pounds heavier than I am now. I realized that without my health, nothing else really matters anyway.

How has minimalism shaped your approach to health and fitness?

I do simple exercises that I enjoy. I discovered that I didn?t need to hit the gym for two hours a day to get fit. I can exercise for less than 20 minutes and if I do that every day, it makes a massive difference in my life.

In your article ?Minimalism is Healthy: How I Lost 70 Pounds,? you recommend associating junk food with pain to gain leverage not to eat poorly. How has this approach helped you clean up your diet?

For a long time, I treated food as entertainment?as a sort of pacifier. No more. Now food is nutrition; it?s my fuel. I had to stop thinking of it as entertainment. That doesn?t mean I don?t enjoy my meals. I enjoy them immensely. I just don?t eat to pacify myself any longer.

How did you formulate your ?18 minute workout? plan? What do you do when you get bored with it?

In addition to my daily 18 minutes, I walk a lot, which is my form of mediation?just me and my thoughts. That said, I don?t get bored with my exercises, because I push myself, which is never boring.

Diet is clearly a huge part of staying fit. In brief, how would you describe your approach to a healthy diet?

Diet is so important. I eat a lot of greens, a lot of fruits and vegetables. Other than fish, I don?t eat meat, nor do I eat sugar or bread. I avoid dairy and processed foods. And I don?t have ?cheat days.?

You argue that exercise gives us more time rather than less time, like most people assume. Can you elaborate/expound on this idea?

When I was fat (yes I was fat; let?s call a spade a spade), I was tired and I would often crash in the afternoons or evenings. I don?t crash anymore; I have more energy at age 31 than I ever did in my corpulent 20s. I also require less sleep these days, which gives me extra time to write/read/think/live life.

    ?????????????

Millburn closed our interview with this simple encouragement: ?Health is a lifetime commitment. You?ll never ?get there.? Thus, the key is to make tiny improvements each day, incremental improvements that?ll drastically change your health in the long run. It?s amazing what you?ll see in the rearview after a month, a year, two years of traveling down the right path.?

    Count us encouraged.

Skype starts testing video voicemail feature on OS X, Android and iOS, we go hands-on (video) (update)

    Skype starts testing video voicemail

Facebook and Vine were just the beginning -- you should have known that. Especially once the biggest social network in the world started dipping its toes in the VoIP pool. Skype isn't about to let others encroach on its hard won territory without a fight. The Microsoft-owned messaging platform has started testing what amounts to a video voicemail feature on OS X, Android and iOS, something that had already been hinted at in its updated TOS. Why those operating systems at first, without any word about Windows or Windows Phone, we're unsure. But it's a safe bet Redmond's own platforms will get the feature sooner rather than later. Currently users in the US and UK should be seeing the option, just dig a bit as it might be hidden behind a more actions or overflow icon, as it is on Android. Customers are getting 20 free video messages to start, though we weren't able to wrangle any further details out of the company regarding pricing.

(Update: While we still have some unanswered questions regarding pricing, Skype did say that unlimited voice messaging will be included as part of a premium subscription.)

(Update 2: A Skype spokesperson reached out to us with the following statement about availability:

"Users in these markets across all Windows desktop and mobile platforms can receive messages, too. We will have send capability in Windows by end of April. In the meantime, we continue to test this new feature in its early release."

April isn't ideal, but it's better than nothing.)

VP: Chavez getting 'complex and tough' treatments

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) ? Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is undergoing "extremely complex and tough" treatments following cancer surgery, his vice president said Wednesday.

It was the first time that the government described Chavez's latest treatment following his surgery in those terms. The government has not given details about what sort of treatments Chavez is now undergoing in Havana, more than two months after his fourth cancer-related surgery on Dec. 11.

"You all know that we've gone through extremely complex moments in December, you remember, in January. Later, the whole post-operative cycle concluded. And today our commander is receiving complementary treatments, as we have said, extremely complex and tough treatments," Vice President Nicolas Maduro said on television, without giving details.

"He is carrying out, let's say, assimilating as he would say, in the spirit of battle, but they're complex treatments... that should at some point begin to close the cycle of treatment of his illness," Maduro said. "We have passed along to him all the strength ... and all the love of the Venezuelan people."

Maduro spoke after returning on Wednesday from a trip to Cuba, where Chavez continues to receive medical care. Maduro said he had met with the president's doctors and relatives. He said that the president's elder brother, Adan, had also returned from Cuba to Venezuela on Wednesday.

Chavez hasn't been seen or spoken publicly since Dec. 10, when he traveled to Havana for the operation.

Venezuelans on both sides of the country's political divide have been speculating about the socialist leader's condition amid vague reports about his health, and Maduro's latest remarks seemed likely to feed more speculation.

In other recent updates, government officials have expressed hope of Chavez returning home. In his latest comments, Maduro didn't mention that.

Bolivian President Evo Morales had said on Jan. 22 that Chavez was "receiving physical therapy" so that he could return home to Venezuela. Morales also said at the time that he hoped to see his friend and ally attending "international events" soon.

Venezuelan Information Minister Ernesto Villegas said on Jan. 26 that during the surgery a "malignant lesion" was removed from Chavez's pelvis and that his recovery has been favorable. Villegas also said that Chavez had begun "systemic medical treatment for the fundamental illness."

Medical experts consulted by The Associated Press have said the government's account of "systemic medical treatment" could mean various types of chemotherapy or drug treatments, depending on the type of cancer.

Chavez has had tumors repeatedly removed from his pelvic region, and has also undergone prior rounds of chemotherapy and radiation treatment. The 58-year-old president hasn't revealed the type of the cancer or the precise location of the tumors removed.

    Android Central

Android Central at Mobile World Congress

Fresh from CES where they announced a whole raft of new Android devices, Alcatel has announced yet another smartphone. The latest in the company's One Touch line, the One Touch Star is a distinctly mid-range flavored device that will likely be on display at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Oh, and it comes in a pretty fetching shade of pink.

There is also an all white version, along with a black fronted, silver backed variety too. Beneath the colorful exterior, the One Touch Star houses a dual-core 1GHz CPU, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of on board storage and a microSD card slot. The 4-inch device houses a 480x800 resolution AMOLED display, and runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. The One Touch Star is powered by a modest, yet likely fit for purpose 1500mAh battery, and houses a 5MP rear camera along with a VGA resolution front facer.

So, not likely to set the world on fire, but could still offer a solid enough Jelly Bean experience to those hunting for a more budget-oriented device.

BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) - The Boise State Broncos have just one game this week, but it's a big one against the ranked New Mexico Lobos. With that daunting task ahead, Leon Rice doesn't mind a little extra prep time.

"It'll help us get our legs back, our emotions back, because you know we're gonna have to play an A+ game down in New Mexico, everybody knows that. It's one of the toughest places to play in the country, they've got great players ... there's a lot you have to overcome.

"And the lesson that we've learned playing at Michigan State, and at Creighton, and at Colorado State, all these tough places we've had to play, everything has to come together for that game," said Rice.

    Obama's plan for universal preschool

Two days after his State of the Union pledge to guarantee high quality preschool for every 4-year-old in the U.S., President Barack Obama takes his pitch on the road on Thursday to an Atlanta suburb where he will deliver a speech on the issue at a local recreation center.

Obama cast his preschool plan as a way to bring low-income and minority children up to speed with higher-income children?a move he says would save taxpayer money and give those children greater opportunity to succeed over their lifetimes.

"Every dollar we invest in high-quality early childhood education can save more than seven dollars later on by boosting graduation rates, reducing teen pregnancy, even reducing violent crime," Obama said in his State of the Union remarks. "In states that make it a priority to educate our youngest children, like Georgia or Oklahoma, studies show students grow up more likely to read and do math at grade level, graduate high school, hold a job, form more stable families of their own."

The president is set to speak at 1:20 p.m. ET at the Decatur Community Recreation Center, after a tour of a local pre-kindergarten classroom.

According to a fact sheet released by the White House on Thursday morning, Obama's preschool plan would create a new federal-state cost-sharing partnership to guarantee high-quality preschool to all low- and moderate-income 4-year-old children, including families that earn up to 200 percent of the poverty level. The program would be extended to middle-class families who may pay on a sliding scale, and would incentivize full-day kindergarten.

The Department of Education will allocate funds to states based on the number of 4-year-olds in each state who qualify. Standards for preschools will include "well-trained teachers, who are paid comparably to K-12 staff," as well as small class size and a rigorous curriculum.

White House officials said the new preschool proposal will not replace or destroy the current Head Start early education government program. Instead, a new early Head Start program will be created to support communities affected by the new preschool proposal.

The White House has not released cost estimates for the new preschool plan. The president has said this proposal and others announced in his address would not add to the federal deficit.

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) ? When it comes to enjoying sporting events meat-free, Lakers and Clippers fans have a lot to celebrate, according to a new survey released Wednesday.

Animal rights group People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has named STAPLES Center as the most vegetarian-friendly arena in the NBA ? along with a not-so-subtle jab at the two teams? respective season trajectories.

?Clippers fans may have more to cheer about this year than Lakers fans do, but one thing that fans of both teams can celebrate is the STAPLES Center?s number-one ranking on PETA?s inaugural top 10 most vegetarian-friendly NBA arenas list,? said PETA Associate Director of Campaigns Lindsay Rajt.

Menus at the downtown Los Angeles venue include everything from vegan sloppy Joes, a veggie burger, and vegan sushi.

The sloppy Joe is made from soy-based tempeh with peppers, onions, and brown sugar barbecue sauce, in addition to other traditional animal-friendly dishes like edamame, PB&J, and hummus and pita plate.

Fans in the club sections of the arena can also enjoy a couscous salad with peppers, onions, zucchini, and fig vinaigrette; butternut squash with shallots, spinach, toasted pecans, and walnut vinaigrette; and green beans with dried figs, almonds, shallots, and red-wine vinaigrette.

The only other California arena to place in this year?s top 10 list was the Bay Area?s Oracle Arena, home of the Golden State Warriors, which features an Asian focus with a Vietnamese ginger-garlic tofu sandwich, tofu lettuce wraps, and Vietnamese noodle salad lead.

Teen wins 'Jeopardy!' with hilarious, risky play

    By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor

Winning "Jeopardy!" is tough; winning it with any level of panache is even tougher. But teen contestant Leonard Cooper did just that Wednesday night, finessing a big Daily Double risk into a Teen Tournament win -- even if he didn't know the Final Jeopardy! answer.

The 17-year-old high school senior from Little Rock, Ark. charter school eSTEM Public High already had a certain amount of flair when he originally appeared in the tournament -- an crossed-arms stance and a direct delivery of his answers that sometimes made him seem a bit overly serious.

But he roared back Wednesday in the final moments, wagering $18,000 on a Daily Double question about the play "12 Angry Men," and got the correct answer. (Host Alex Trebek called it a "gutsy move.") Cooper headed into Final Jeopardy! with $37,000 and with the category "Military Men," he got this clue:?"On June 6, 1944 he said, 'The eyes of the world are upon you.'"

As it turns out, Cooper did something else gutsy: Before even seeing the clue, he wagered no money -- and for his answer (in the form of a question), he wrote this cheeky reply: "Who is some guy in Normandy(?) But I just won $75,000!"

It wasn't a sure bet either -- one of his opponents could have answered correctly and collected more money. But he didn't, which meant Cooper landed the top prize for the Teen Tournament champ: $75,000. Trebek saw his answer and chuckled, "You did indeed! Way to go!"

"Seeing the clue come up was the most relieving part of the entire trip," he told Arkansas Online about the big Daily Double bet after the show aired. "I knew I had to do something if I wanted to win, so betting $18,000 was kind of nerve-wracking. But when I saw the clue, I was happy."

"I've been watching Jeopardy! for so many years, I've been wanting to be on the show for a while," he continued. "Actually being on and being able to win a tournament, that was the icing on the cake."

By the way, the answer to the clue? Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Violent exploding stars give birth to cosmic rays

Greg Stewart / SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory

An artist's illustration of a supernova explosion, which sends off shock waves that accelerate protons to the point that they become cosmic rays, a process called Fermi acceleration. Many details of Fermi acceleration are unknown, but data from NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope provide overwhelming evidence that Fermi acceleration is responsible for cosmic rays.

    By Charles Q. Choi
    Space.com

After a century of mystery, scientists now have the first conclusive evidence that cosmic rays come from the violent aftermaths of exploding stars, researchers say.

Cosmic rays strike Earth from every direction in space with gargantuan amounts of energy, surpassing anything the most powerful atom smashers on Earth can produce. A wide variety of cosmic rays exist, from electrons to massive atomic nuclei to antimatter, but about 90 percent are protons.

Austrian scientist Victor Hess discovered these electrically charged particles from deep space after a high-altitude balloon flight in 1912. However, despite a century of research, the origins of cosmic rays had remained a mystery.

"Cosmic rays are a significant part of the total energy content of our galaxy, but so far we have had no incontrovertible evidence (of) where they come from," said study author Stefan Funk, an astrophysicist at the Kavli Institute for Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology at Stanford University.

    Cosmic ray mystery
Scientists have long suspected cosmic rays were linked to the aftermaths of supernovas, the most powerful exploding stars in the universe, which are visible at the farthest edges of the cosmos. Researchers speculated that cosmic rays are accelerated gradually and over long periods of time by the shells of gas that supernovas expel, known as supernova remnants.

However, since cosmic rays have electrical charges, they get deflected by any magnetic field they encounter. Since these rays likely careened around before reaching Earth, it's challenging to prove where they were born. [8 Baffling Mysteries of Astronomy]

To help solve the mystery of cosmic ray nurseries, researchers spent four years analyzing gamma rays with the Large Area Telescope onboard NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. The scientists focused on two supernova remnants, both located within the Milky Way: IC 433, which is about 5,000 light-years away in the constellation Gemini, and W44, which is about 10,000 light-years away in the constellation Aquila.

NASA / DOE / Fermi LAT Collaboration

In order to understand the origin and acceleration of cosmic ray protons, researchers used data from the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, and targeted W44 and IC 443, two supernova remnants located thousands of light years away.

"We found, for the first time, sources in the universe that accelerate protons," Funk told Space.com.

    Supernova clues
The shockwaves from supernovas?can, in principle, accelerate protons to cosmic ray energies through a process known as Fermi acceleration. In this phenomenon, protons get trapped by magnetic fields in the fast-moving shock waves and accelerated to near the speed of light. Collisions among faster and slower protons can generate subatomic particles called neutral pions, which in turn quickly decay into gamma-ray photons, the most energetic form of light.

Unlike cosmic rays, gamma rays are not affected by magnetic fields, which means they zip out in straight lines and can be traced back to their sources. As such, the researchers looked for these gamma rays as direct evidence of cosmic ray creation.

NASA / DOE / Fermi LAT Collaboration, Chandra X-ray Observatory, ESA; Herschel / XMM-Newton

Finding evidence for the acceleration of protons has long been a key issue in the efforts to explain the origin of cosmic rays. This pair of spectra from two supernova remnants (also shown visibly with data from various satellites and wavelengths) are the "smoking gun" that researchers have been looking for.

The gamma rays from Fermi acceleration come in a distinctive range of energies. The data the scientists gathered from the supernova remnants matched the characteristic energy signature of neutral pion decay, clearly linking supernovas to cosmic rays.

"This is a 100-year-old mystery and being able to see direct evidence of the accelerated protons felt great," Funk said.

"Until now, we had only theoretical calculations and common sense to guide us in the belief that cosmic rays were generated in supernova remnants," said astrophysicist Jerry Ostriker at Columbia University, who was not involved in the study. "The direct detection of pion-decay signatures in supernova remnants closes the loop and provides dramatic observational evidence for a significant component of cosmic rays."

Although this research shows that supernovas can generate cosmic rays, it remains uncertain whether the star explosions cause most cosmic rays, or if there are other potentially more important sources for these particles, Funk said. It is also unclear how exactly supernova remnants accelerate protons, and up to what energies they can speed the particles.

"The acceleration in the shock wave is a rather slow process and happens over the lifetime of the supernova remnants," Funk said. "We would like to understand the efficiency of the acceleration in different evolutionary stages and other details of the process."

In future research, scientists could also hunt for the origins of cosmic rays of even higher energy than these protons. "To do so, one needs to use ground-based telescopes, instruments that use the interaction of gamma rays with the Earth atmosphere, such as HESS or VERITAS or the future Cherenkov Telescope Array," Funk said.

Ultra?high-energy cosmic rays, ones high both in mass and energy, "are extremely rare and therefore one needs huge detection areas," Funk added. "One such installation is the Pierre Auger Array in Argentina, and in the future people are talking about installing an instrument on the International Space Station that would look for interactions in the Earth atmosphere."

The scientists will detail their findings in Friday's issue of the journal Science, as well as at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Boston Thursday.

Central Michigan Life ? Idealized love versus the real deal

Relationships can suffer for the hopeless romantics who view love as a fairytale.

As a little girl, senior Kiara Lancaster believed in the relationships portrayed by the likes of Disney. Before the Harrison Township native learned being in a relationship was a collaborative effort and was split 50-50, she thought her Prince Charming was going to do the work while she could sit back and relax.

?When I was younger at least, I had this whole huge fairytale (idea) that some guy was going to sweep me off my feet, and you wouldn?t have to do any work,? Lancester said.

Human Environmental Studies Professor Edgar Long said American culture is fascinated with the idea of marriage and love and that fairytales have a role in alternating how people ? specifically females ? view love.

?I wouldn?t say they damage relationships, but they shape people?s perspectives of what they can expect in a relationship: what love is, what love is not,? Long said.

Senior Allison Pavloff said she thinks fairytales don?t damage relationships. Though, the love ideal has its pros and cons.

?I think it gives, at least women, a sense of hope that not everyone?s going to be alone for the rest of their lives,? the Rochester Hills said. ?But, at the same time, I think that leaves men to live up to a certain expectation like Prince Charming did, so I feel it kind of goes both ways.?

Long said there are other things in the culture that can impact the way people view relationships more negatively than fairytales in shows such as ?The Bachelor? and ?The Bachelorette? because of how unrealistically they can portray love.

?Relationships take work and in those kind of situations, you don?t see any of that all,? Long said.

Freshman Chase Edwards thinks it?s nice for women to have the goal of achieving that happily-ever-after fairytale ending. However, the Flint native said women need to learn how to let it go as they get older and realize every man is not going to be Prince Charming.

?She wants you to be all kinds of stuff at the same time, like that prince,? Edwards said. ?They?re noble. They?re chivalrous. They?re always kind. They?re always polite ? Human beings are not like this all the time. We?re not always going to want to be polite.?

Lancaster said people realize what is real and what is a fairytale when they get into serious relationships. She said that doesn?t mean the relationship still can?t have a happily ever after ending.

?Love isn?t lost, it?s just love is not a fairytale,? Lancaster said. ?You can have your happily ever after, but you?re not going to have it if you hold on to unrealistic expectations.?

Long said it will take work in order for relationships to span over a long period of time. Instead of there being a hero and damsel in distress, he said relationships require a companion type of marriage where the partners work together and learn to love the person more as time passes.

?We have these fictitious influences that impact our thoughts about love and relationships and all those kinds of things,? Long said. ?But, in the end, just like in any part of the world, you have to learn to love that person.?

LHC switches off for two-year break

The Large Hadron Collider has turned off its particle beams ahead of a shut-down period that will last two years.

The particle accelerator is best known for identifying a particle believed to be the Higgs boson in late 2012.

But following technical faults shortly after it first switched on, the machine has never been run at the full energies for which it was designed.

A programme of repairs and upgrades to the accelerator and its infrastructure should allow that in late 2014.

The LHC's beams were "dumped" early on Thursday morning, but it will take until Saturday morning for the machine's 1,734 magnets to warm up to room temperature.

Then an unprecedented period of upgrade and repair - dubbed "Long Shutdown 1" - will begin.

The machine ran at particle energies of 8 trillion electron-volts (TeV) in 2012, up from the prior high point of 7TeV in 2011. But when the shutdown concludes, slated for the end of November 2014, it should be set to run at 13TeV - far and away the highest-energy collisions ever attempted by scientists.

The major work required is to upgrade the connections between the magnets, such that they can handle the enormous electrical currents that may pass through them at higher particle energies and in the event of faults such as the one in 2008.

But the shutdown maintenance schedule also includes upgrades to all four of the LHC's detectors, the shielding of electronics - even the ventilation system of the 27km-long tunnel that houses the main accelerator ring.

The shutdown is due to conclude in late November 2014, after which the system will be put through its paces and experiments are expected to resume in February or March 2015.

Manager says safety issues are ignored at Hanford nuclear site

The long-troubled project to clean up radioactive waste in Hanford, Wash., has come under attack from another senior manager, the third to assert that top executives are ignoring serious problems in the plant's design.

Donna Busche, the manager of environmental and nuclear safety for San Francisco-based URS Corp., alleged in a lawsuit filed Tuesday that executives at the $13.4-billion project attempted to suppress her warnings and were working to fire her.

Busche, a nuclear engineer and health physicist, alleged that pressure to meet deadlines led the company to retaliate against her for insisting on stringent safety practices at the former nuclear weapons complex.

Hanford is the nation's most contaminated piece of property, home to 56 million gallons of highly radioactive sludge in underground tanks that pose a long-term risk of leaking into the Columbia River. Dozens of the tanks are already leaking and threatening the largest river in the western U.S.

The Energy Department is in a race to pump out the waste, embed it into glass and ship it to a future dump, but so far not a single gallon has been treated and the project is more than 20 years behind the original schedule.

Construction has been stopped since last year over allegations that the plant's design for mixing radioactive waste could allow explosive hydrogen gas to detonate inside the plant, or allow enough radioactive solids to accumulate in tanks to trigger nuclear fission.

The concerns, backed up by panels of outside experts, forced the plant's construction contractors, URS and San Francisco-based Bechtel, to begin a full-scale test of the system to mix the sludge, but using nonradioactive surrogates.

The concerns about the Hanford waste treatment plant ? which resembles a small industrial city with many individual processing plants, laboratories and ancillary buildings ? have been voiced by senior officials on the project.

Walter Tamosaitis, a senior URS scientist and manager of a large research staff, has said his warnings about potential hydrogen gas explosions led to his being isolated at work, given no assignments and put in a basement office without furniture.

In August, Gary Brunson, then the Energy Department's engineering division director, sent a memo to higher-level officials that alleged 34 instances in which Bechtel had committed factual errors, pursued unsafe designs or provided equipment that did not meet federal standards. Brunson said those failures had led to delays and increased costs and that the Energy Department should remove Bechtel as the design authority for the plant.

After the Brunson memo, an investigation by the Energy Department's office of nuclear safety found in November that Bechtel had committed potential health and safety violations, a finding that could lead to a multimillion-dollar fine.

This month, the Government Accountability Office said the success of the entire Hanford project hinged on finding solutions to a wide range of technical problems. The report noted that the cost had jumped to $13.4 billion from $12.3 billion, and would probably increase further.

Busche's suit named URS Energy and Construction and Bechtel National. A spokeswoman for URS said the company would not comment on Busche's allegations as a matter of policy on litigation. Busche had earlier filed a whistle-blower complaint with the Labor Department, but elevated the dispute to a formal lawsuit Tuesday when she filed the suit in federal court in Spokane, Wash.

Bechtel National, the lead contractor at the Hanford project, said it took concerns about safety seriously and did not tolerate retaliation or harassment against employees who raised them.

"We have thoroughly reviewed Ms. Busche's complaint and found no basis for it," the company said in a statement. "We remain committed to ensuring that [the waste treatment plant's] nuclear safety and quality culture is strong."

But Tom Carpenter, executive director of the watchdog group Hanford Challenge, said the allegations raised by Busche, Tamosaitis and Brunson demonstrated the depth of the problems affecting the stalled project.

"Congress needs to take a hard look at the situation here and determine whether we can go forward," Carpenter said Wednesday.

In an interview, Busche said one of her biggest technical fights involves a risk-analysis tool that URS and Bechtel want to use to assess the potential for hydrogen explosions inside the plant's piping systems. Busche said the tool would allow tens of thousands of safety components to be removed from the design if it predicted the risk of an explosion as being extremely small.

She said the standard approach to safety design requires no possibility of an explosion that would release radioactivity.

"I'm holding the line on that one," she said.

The suit refers to that dispute, which surfaced at a lengthy hearing conducted in 2010 by the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board, an independent federal agency. During days of testimony, Busche was often at odds with officials from her own company and the Energy Department. In her lawsuit, Busche said that URS and Bechtel officials had privately asked whether she could alter her testimony and she refused.

The safety board apparently knew that she was under pressure. During the hearings, a safety board member asked whether she was up to the pressure that was likely to be applied to her, apparently not knowing her assertions that she was already being asked to change her testimony. She assured the board she was capable of withstanding the pressure, according to a transcript of the safety board hearing.

In the aftermath of the hearings, URS officials told her to stop putting her safety concerns in writing, she claims in the suit, and Bechtel "actively sabotaged her work."

Top seeds hold momentum on Round 4 of 2013 Rip Curl Pro Puerto Rico

Not many upsets were seen during the fourth round (Round of 64) of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 4-Star 2013 Rip Curl Pro Puerto Rico, as the top seeds managed to register victory in the stormy eight-foot waves that were on offer at Isabella in Puerto Rico on Monday, February 11.

The round that started off with 64 seemingly in-form surfers cut trimmed down to 32 after a series of adrenaline pumping battles.

A variety of strategies were seen throughout the course of the day as the surfers tried to hold their own in conditions that could hardly be considered ideal.

With an impressive prize purse and coveted ASP ranking points on offer, the surfers had plenty of reason to go all out at the on-going ASP 4-Star event.

One of the day?s most impressive surfer, Nathaniel Curran, delivered plenty of entertainment during the ninth round, as he managed to hold off his fellow American surfers Taylor Clark, Blake Jones and Dean Randazzo in a four-man battle.

The 28-year-old Californian opened his account with a 4.67-point ride, but went on to add an additional and apparently decisive 7.00 off his second business-wave, thus finishing with a heat-total of 11.67 points.

?My strategy was to try and be selective,? Curran said. ?There?s not a lot of guys catching waves and I lucked in to the first one and it put me on the board. I was trying to be patient and I got caught down in to five minutes before my next good one. I would have rather got one earlier, but I think the guys that are patient are the guys that are getting through today.?

Curran?s compatriot Clark also advanced through into the fifth round (Round of 32) to continue his campaign for the coveted top honours and respect.

Another American surfer and seasoned ASP World Championship Tour competitor CJ Hobgood had a reputation to live up to since he was the top seed in the event.

The 33-year-old responded to the pressure well and showed a great presence of mind to emerge victorious despite the odds not exactly tilting in his favour.

Obama: Nation stronger, GOP should back his plans

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Uncompromising and politically emboldened, President Barack Obama urged a deeply divided Congress Tuesday night to embrace his plans to use government money to create jobs and strengthen the nation's middle class. He declared Republican ideas for reducing the deficit "even worse" than the unpalatable deals Washington had to stomach during his first term.

In his first State of the Union address since winning re-election, Obama conceded economic revival is an "unfinished task," but he claimed clear progress and said he prepared to build on it as he embarks on four more years in office.

"We have cleared away the rubble of crisis, and we can say with renewed confidence that the state of our union is strong," Obama said in an hour-long address to a joint session of Congress and a television audience of millions.

With unemployment persistently high and consumer confidence falling, the economy remains a vulnerability for Obama and could disrupt his plans for pursuing a broader agenda, including immigration overhaul, stricter gun laws and climate change legislation.

Still, fresh off a convincing re-election win, Obama made clear in his remarks that he was determined to press his political advantage against a divided, defensive and worried Republican Party. Numerous times he urged Congress to act quickly on his priorities ? but vowed to act on some issues on his own if they do not.

Obama also announced new steps to reduce the U.S. military footprint abroad, with 34,000 American troops withdrawing from Afghanistan within a year. And he had a sharp rebuke for North Korea, which launched a nuclear test just hours before his remarks, saying, "Provocations of the sort we saw last night will only isolate them further."

In specific proposals for shoring up the economy in his second term, an assertive Obama called for increased federal spending to fix the nation's roads and bridges, the first increase in the minimum wage in six years and expansion of early education to every American 4-year-old. Seeking to appeal for support from Republicans, he promised that none of his proposals would increase the deficit "by a single dime" although he didn't explain how he would pay for his programs or how much they would cost.

In the Republican response to Obama's address, rising GOP star Marco Rubio of Florida came right back at the president, saying his solution "to virtually every problem we face is for Washington to tax more, borrow more and spend more."

Sen. Rubio said presidents of both parties have recognized that the free enterprise system brings middle-class prosperity.

"But President Obama?" Rubio said. "He believes it's the cause of our problems."

Still, throughout the House chamber there were symbolic displays of bipartisanship. Rep. Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., arrived early and sat with Sen. Mark Kirk, R-Ill., just returned in January nearly a year after suffering a debilitating stroke. As a captain in the National Guard, Duckworth lost both her legs while serving in Iraq in 2004.

A few aisles away, the top two tax writers in Congress, Rep. Dave Camp, R-Mich., and Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., sat together.

But as a sign that divisions still remain, three of the most conservative Supreme Court justices skipped Obama's speech. Six of the nine attended. Missing were Justices Clarence Thomas, Antonin Scalia and Samuel Alito.

Jobs and growth dominated Obama's address. Many elements of his economic blueprint were repacked proposals from his first term that failed to gain traction on Capitol Hill.

Standing in Obama's way now is a Congress that remains nearly as divided as it was during the final years of his first term, when Washington lurched from one crisis to another.

The president implored lawmakers to break through partisan logjams, asserting that "the greatest nation on Earth cannot keep conducting its business by drifting from one manufactured crisis to the next."

"Americans don't expect government to solve every problem," he said. "They do expect us to forge reasonable compromise where we can."

Yet Obama offered few signs of being willing to compromise himself, instead doubling down on his calls to create jobs by spending more government money and insisting that lawmakers pay down the deficit through a combination of targeted spending cuts and tax increases. But he offered few specifics on what he wanted to see cut, focusing instead on the need to protect programs that help the middle class, elderly and poor.

He did reiterate his willingness to tackle entitlement changes, particularly on Medicare, though he has ruled out increasing the eligibility age for the popular benefit program for seniors.

Republicans are ardently opposed to Obama's calls for legislating more tax revenue to reduce the deficit and offset broad the automatic spending cuts ? known as the sequester ? that are to take effect March 1. The president accused GOP lawmakers of shifting the cuts from defense to programs that would help the middle class and elderly, as well as those supporting education and job training.

"That idea is even worse," he said.

Obama broke little new ground on two agenda items he has pushed vigorously since winning re-election: overhauling the nation's fractured immigration laws and enacting tougher gun control measures in the wake of the horrific massacre of school children in Newtown, Conn. Yet he pressed for urgency on both, calling on Congress to send him an immigration bill "in the next few months" and insisting lawmakers hold votes on his gun proposals.

"Each of these proposals deserves a vote in Congress," he said. "If you want to vote no, that's your choice."

Numerous lawmakers wore green lapel ribbons in memory of those killed in the December shootings in Connecticut. Among those watching in the House gallery: the parents of 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton, shot and killed recently in a park just a mile from the president's home in Chicago, as well as other victims of gun violence.

On the economy, Obama called for raising the federal minimum wage from $7.25 to $9 by 2015. The minimum wage has been stagnant since 2007, and administration officials said the increase would strengthen purchasing power. The president also wants Congress to approve automatic increases in the wage to keep pace with inflation.

Looking for common ground anywhere he could find it, Obama framed his proposal to boost the minimum wage by pointing out that even his GOP presidential rival liked the idea. He said, "Here's an idea that Gov. Romney and I actually agreed on last year: Let's tie the minimum wage to the cost of living, so that it finally becomes a wage you can live on."

Obama also renewed his calls for infrastructure spending, investments he sought repeatedly during his first term with little support from Republicans. He pressed lawmakers to approve a $50 billion "fix it first" program that would address the most urgent infrastructure needs.

Education also figures in Obama's plans to boost American competitiveness in the global economy. Under his proposal, the federal government would help states provide pre-school for all 4-year-olds. Officials did not provide a cost for the pre-school programs but said the government would provide financial incentives to help states.

Among the other initiatives Obama is proposing:

? A $1 billion plan to create 15 "manufacturing institutes" that would bring together businesses, universities and the government. If Congress opposes the initiative, Obama plans to use his presidential powers to create three institutes on his own.

? Creation of an "energy security trust" that would use revenue from federal oil and gas leases to support development of clean energy technologies such as biofuels and natural gas

? Doubling of renewable energy in the U.S. from wind, solar and geothermal sources by 2020.

? Launching negotiations on a free trade agreement between the U.S. and European Union

Obama also called on Congress to tackle the threat of climate change, another issue that eluded him in his first term. The president pledged to work with lawmakers to seek bipartisan solutions but said if Capitol Hill doesn't act, he'll order his Cabinet to seek steps he can take using his presidential powers.

Taking a swipe at those who question the threat of global warming, Obama said, "We can choose to believe that Superstorm Sandy, and the most severe drought in decades, and the worst wildfires some states have ever seen were all just a freak coincidence. Or we can choose to believe in the overwhelming judgment of science - and act before it's too late."

Tackling voters' rights issues, Obama announced the creation of a commission that will seek to make it easier and faster for people to cast ballots on Election Day. He used as an example the story of 102-year-old Desiline Victor, a Florida woman who waited in line to vote for several hours during the November election. Victor attended Tuesday's speech as a guest of the first lady and was applauded heartily by the lawmakers.

Obama also called on Congress to pass legislation giving the government more power to combat the rapidly growing threat of cyberattacks. And, as a down payment on that, the president announced that he has signed an executive order to fight electronic espionage through the development of voluntary standards to protect networks and computer systems that run critical infrastructure.
