Even if your partner isn't a diehard yogi, I will basically guarantee that these moves from Jessica Bellofatto of KamaDeva Yoga will be a game-changer. Here's the proof: a) just look at these pictures (OK, you're right: everything looks better on the beach--especially when it's the Amansala Eco Chic Resort in Tulum, Mexico, which I have basically been obsessed with visiting for the last, oh, 10 years) and b) the moves are generally not hard, and how great would it be to be all entwined with your partner while trying them out? Aww.
Partner Baddha Konasana
Sit back to back with your partner, with the soles of your feet together, and your knees apart, in the yoga position known as "cobbler's pose" or "bound angle." Close your eyes and feel your back pressed up against your partner's (one of you can sit on a cushion if you're much shorter). See if you can begin to synchronize your breath with your partner's, inhaling together through the nose; exhaling together through the nose. Even though you're not facing one another, this pose can be very intimate, as you are lining up your central energy channels, along which the chakras are located.
Lover's Twist
Stay in the previous position and twist to the right. You can place your right hand on your partner's left knee and use that leverage to deepen your twist.
Lover's Stretch
Still in this back-to-back position, one of you will begin to gently fold forward, as the partner begins to lie back facilitating the forward bend of the other person. This will require silent communication, as the person folding forward will likely be coming up against some resistance in their hips and inner thighs. Allow the weight of your partner's body up against you to gently ease you down, opening further with each breath.
Lover's Straddle
Turn and face each other, in a wide-seated straddle. Touch your feet against each other, and sit up with a long spine. Reach out and hold hands. Keep your eyes open and begin to gaze into your partner's eyes.Work with synchronizing your breath, but this time, try exhaling as he/she does and inhaling while he/she exhales, all the while keeping your gaze on each other's eyes. Feel the energy exchange that takes place, and the intimacy of simply looking your partner in the eye for several minutes.
Down Doggie
This is a fun one (and not as precarious as it looks!). Have your partner do downward facing dog. Stand in front of your partner's hands, facing away from your partner, facing forward. Do a forward bend and place your hands just a foot in front of your partner's hands. From there, place one foot and then the other on your partner's sacrum and begin to straighten both legs so that you are in an L-shape (90 degree handstand). Breathe together--or hey, worse comes to worst, just laugh!
Partner's Savasana
One of you lays in final relaxation, on your back. The partner who's starting at the head starts with a massage to the neck, the hands, the legs and feet--using some delicious smelling essential oils! Take turns giving and receiving a massage.
Too awesome! Want to try these cool couples poses? Would your partner be willing to try them with you? (PS: there are lots more great yoga tips here!)
