Cornelius firefighters raise $791 to fight cancer at The Human Bean ...

Cornelius firefighters raised $791 to fight cancer this weekend during their fundraiser at The Human Bean on East Baseline Road.

The money came from the coffee shop's tips. It sponsors the firefighters who are participating in the 22nd annual Scott Firefighter Stairclimb event, which raises money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Eight firefighters rotated shifts between 5 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, said Lt. Phillip Duncan. They held signs, greeted customers and encouraged donations.

Funds from The Human Bean went to the team's main donation account, which Duncan said now totals about $4,300. They have until March 29 to continue raising money.

The stairclimb is a yearly timed firefighter race up the stairs of the Columbia Center in downtown Seattle in full gear and breathing air packs. It is the second tallest building west of the Mississippi and contains 69 flights of stairs, 1,311 steps and 788 feet of vertical elevation.

This will be the 7th year that members of the Cornelius Fire Department have participated in the event, which utilizes sponsorships, individual and department fundraising, and entry fees to raise money for blood cancer research, education and patient services.

Last year, Duncan said, Cornelius firefighters raised more than $8,000, including about $800 from The Human Bean fundraiser.
